Giovanni Varlese, (ITALIAN 1888-1922), a Neapolitan patinated bronze model of a running youth, cast after the Antique original of the Lysippian School, (Lyssipus of Sicyon, 395-305 BC), circa 1900, portrayed as nude and leaning forwards in depiction of motion, on a rectangular section base, inscribed 'G. VARLESE / NAPOLI', 110cm high, 75cm long, 45cm wide The Roman bronze after which this work was cast was excavated at the Villa of the Papyri, Herculaneum, and is held at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples. Dating to the late 1st Century BC - early 1st Century AD, the Runner was almost certainly a Roman copy of a Lyssipian work of the 4th century BC. It has since its excavation, been admired by academics, connoisseurs and tourists alike so the model has always been in demand. A high quality cast of a fine classical bronze, perhaps by the Chiurazzi or Somner foundries in Naples made an excellent souvenir for the wealthy northern European cultural traveller to take home from his Grand Tour, but they very rarely appear in such generous proportions. Indeed, casts of this size were usually bought for the gardens and parterres of noble houses and palaces, one such example gracing the Achillion Palace Gardens on Corfu
