During his career he depicted many Welsh landscapes such as this one as well as classical scenes and views of the Thames. Varley was also an inventor of scientific instruments, notably the graphic telescope which he exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851.

        CORNELIUS VARLEY (BRITISH 1781-1873) Dolgelly, N. Wales Signed and inscribed, 'Dolgelly N. Wales C.Varley' lower right Pencil and grey wash 10 x 17.7 cm (4 x 7 in) Footnote: Cornelius Varley was the brother of John Varley and William Fleetwood Varley. He was both a scientist and an artist. In 1802 and 1803 he visited North Wales, firstly with John and then with William Havell. In 1973 The Morgan Library, New York, acquired an important sketchbook by Cornelius Varley. The sketchbook, on 17 leaves measuring 23 x 36 cm dates from his early tour of North Wales when he was just twenty two. It includes panoramic views of Dolgelly and Cader Idris, mainly in pencil and some watercolours, some signed, inscribed and dated 1803. These impressive panoramic views were among the finest drawings exhibited in the 1973 'Exhibition of Drawings & Watercolours by Cornelius Varley' held at P & D Colnaghi & Co., London.
