Varley. 92' (lower left), 25.3 x 34.7 cm., two (2). Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: John Varley Junior was the grandson of John Varley (1778-1842), and the son of Albert Fleetwood (1804-1876). Varley Jnr. travelled widely, visiting Egypt (sailing there in 1874 in a yacht he built himself), Japan, India and Sri Lanka amongst many other countries, producing a number of paintings and drawings of the landscapes and people that he encountered. The present works undoubtedly originate from the artist's travels to India, and convey a sense of the bright light which saturates the landscape.

(BRITISH 1850-1933) Traders in Felucca's on the river Nile watercolour 14.5 x 11 cm Varley Junior, had a passion for sailing, and in 1874 he built his own yacht and sailed to Egypt, where he remained for two years painting life in the country, especially vignettes of Cairo. Some of Varley paintings of Egypt reflect his interest in maritime pursuits, as in the present scene and several of his works which show the distinctive river boats that dot the Nile. Egyptian vessels were a popular attraction with Europeans because their design varied quite dramatically from Western sailboats. Prior to 1870 and the introduction of the steamboat, visitors to Egypt would cruise the Nile over the course of several months in a dahabiya, a large houseboat-like vessel. The boats in the present work, however, appear to be mostly feluccas, smaller vessels with distinctive lateen sails, used by traders on the Nile to this day.
