Apollinarij Michajlovic Vasnecov Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Landscape painter, Illustrator, b. 1856 - d. 1933

Apollinary Mikhaylovich Vasnetsov (August 6, 1856 – January 23, 1933) was a Russian painter and graphic artist whose elder brother was the more famous Viktor Vasnetsov.[1] He specialized in scenes from the medieval history of Moscow.

Vasnetsov did not receive a formal artistic education. He studied under his older brother, Viktor Vasnetsov, the famous Russian painter. From 1883, he and his brother lived and worked in Abramtsevo where he fell under the influence of Vasily Polenov. In 1898–1899, he travelled across Europe. In addition to epic landscapes of Russian nature, Apollinary Vasnetsov created his own genre of historical landscape reconstruction on the basis of historical and archaeological data. His paintings present a visual picture of medieval Moscow. He was a member of the Association of Travelling Art Exhibitions (Peredvizhniki) from 1899, and an academician from 1900. He became one of the founders and supervisors of the Union of Russian Artists.

VASNETSOV APOLLINARY MIKHAILOVICH (RUSSIAN 1856-1933), KHUDOZHESTVO [The Arts], (Moscow: Iz. I. Knebel, 1908). 8vo (234 x 172 mm) softcover with original wrappers. 133 pages. Text in Russian. LOT NOTES Apollinary Vasnetsov was a Russian (Soviet) painter, art historian, and brother of artist Vasily Vasnetsov best known for his historical paintings. After graduating a seminary near Vyatsk in 1872, he, at the advice of his brother, moved to St. Petersburg, where he studied from the likes of Ilya Repin and Mark Antokolskiy. In 1878, after a short stint as a teacher near Oryol, he leaves for Moscow to fully pursue a career in art. Soon, he becomes close with the members of the Abramtsevo circle at the estate of Savva Mamontov, which included Ilya Repin, Mikhail Vrubel, Valentin Serov, Konstantin Korovin, and others. Beginning in 1883, he exhibits with the Peredvizhniki artists. Throughout the 1880s and 1890s Vasnetsov travels extensively through the Russian Empire, as well as France, Italy, and Germany. He becomes an academician at the St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts in 1900. Vasnetsov then spends the next decade as a professor of landscape painting at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture (1910-1918). The following treatise is an important discussion of the semantics of fine versus the decorative arts, a question Vasnetsov felt was best answered by a working artist such as himself. PROVENANCE INFORMATION This lot comes from the collection of Viktor Kholodkov (1948-2015), who fulfilled his passion for books, avant-garde design and paper memorabilia by devoting his life to collecting and dealing of prominent works of Russian graphic art of the first half of the 20th century. The dedicated collector acquired a multitude of books and artworks throughout decades, meticulously labeling and archiving every single item. Many came directly from the most preeminent artists of the time, as well as from their families and estates. He also possessed a vast number of drawings from the famous collection of another avant-garde enthusiast, Nikolai Khardzhiev. After leaving the USSR in 1989 and settling in California, Viktor continued his work as a Soviet art dealer and critic, actively publishing various articles and contributing to several major Russian avant-garde exhibitions across the U.S., such as the 1991 Russia Under Fire in the 40s on the West Coast and the 1992 Guggenheim exhibition The Great Utopia: The Russian and Soviet Avant-Garde. Kholodkov also contributed to the archives of the biggest American institutions. His sophisticated selection of over 2000 Russian sheet music covers was acquired by The Library of Congress, and an extensive amount of material related to VKhUTEMAS is now at the J. Paul Getty Museum.

In 1901 the artist depicted this Russian city in two works, The Past of Great Novgorod, 15th Century and Harbour in Great Novgorod in the 15th Century, the whereabouts of neither being known. [...] The bright and striking colours of the latter were artistic devices to communicate the magical rise and increasing prosperity of Novgorod in 15th century as a centre of international trade" L.A.Bespalova, Apollinary Mikhailovich Vasnetsov, Moscow, Iskusstvo, 1983. p.103 It is likely that the offered lot, dated 1902, is Harbour in Great Novgorod in the 15th Century. According to Bespalova's catalogue of the artist's works, this painting was shown in the 36 Artists' exhibition in Moscow in 1902.
