2me AAAA Bal / Bullier. 1924.

            Est: $5,000 - $6,000

ARTIST: MARIE VASSILIEFF (1884-1957) SIZE: 30 5/8 x 45 1/4 in./77.8 x 115 cm PRINTER: Risacher, Paris DESCRIPTION: At the center of this poster, a conductor—yes, that's him with the baton—raises his hands, signaling that the symphony is about to commence: the second ever AAAA Ball (Aide Amicale Aux Artistes, or "friendly help to artists"). Numerous benefits and balls for artists were held in Paris around this time; this one was an overture to Russian artist émigrés from the Bolshevik Revolution. The artist, Marie Vassilieff, preceded them: she arrived in Montparnasse in 1907, opened her own atelier in 1912, and collected works by Chagall, Modigliani, Picasso, and Léger. She was a nurse for the French Red Cross during World War I, and painted the ornamental panels for the pillars in the dining room of La Coupole. She exhibited puppet portraits in London in 1920 and in Paris in 1923; these were obviously inspiration for this 1924 poster. (Art Deco; Dance)

            Est: €6,000 - €8,000

MARIE VASSILIEFF (1884-1957) Chimera Figure made of wire, plastic, leather, animal teeth and fabric 34 x 9 x 21 cm Provenance: Private collection, France Maria Vasilyeva (better known as Marie Vassilieff) was born in 1884 and studied medicine and art in St. Petersburg. In 1905, thanks to a travel subsidy granted by Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna, she came to Paris, where she settled permanently in 1907. In Paris, Marie worked as a correspondent for Russian newspapers and continued her artistic education with Henri Matisse. Soon, Marie Vassilieff opened her own studio in Montparnasse, which at the time attracted many artists and foreigners, and in 1912 she set up the «Free Russian Academy» in her studio, then the «Academie Vassilieff». Marie Vassilieff’s studio became a meeting place and party venue for artists such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Nina Hamnett, Amedeo Modigliani, Osip Zadkine, Olga Sacharoff, Juan Gris, Eric Satie, Chaïm Soutine and many others. During World War I, Marie Vassilieff joined the French Red Cross as an ambulance driver and turned her studio, where she taught Cubism, into a canteen for emigrants and artists. Marie Vassilieff is known for her Cubist paintings, decorative furniture and rag or leather character dolls that made her famous in Berlin, New York and London, where Peggy Guggenheim invited her to an exhibition in November 1938. In July 1920, Marie Dormoy, a friend of the writer Paul Léautaud, wrote an article in “Art et decoration”, «New Dolls: «As for Marie Vassilieff, her dolls are true works of art. No one can go wrong, they have such a character that you can recognize them from a thousand. For each one she makes many sketches and, thanks to the power of modeling, the solidity of construction based on the best cubism, the constantly renewed technique, she asserts character, emphasizes heredity, creates characters endowed with feelings and passions, finally gives life to things...».

Marie Vassilieff, Still Life with Masks in a Window, 1946

            Est: €12,000 - €15,000

Signed, dated, and inscribed 'MARIE VASSILIEFF. PARIS 1946' in black lower left. We would like to thank Claude Bernes, Paris, for confirmatory information. The work is to be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné. Maria Vassilieff commenced her artistic training at the St. Petersburg Art Academy. In 1905 she moved to Paris, where she became a pupil of Henri Matisse. Artistically, Vassilieff's work quickly gained recognition and thus she regularly exhibited at the "Salon d'Automne" and the "Salon des Indépendants". As one of only 14 artists, Vassilieff was represented in the epochal exhibition "The Last Futuristic Exhibition of Painting 0.10 (Zero-Ten)" in Petrograd in December 1915. In her later works, her interest in portraiture and the human face emerged, which was not least reflected in her preoccupation with the theme of the mask.

Having situated herself in the vibrant neighborhood of Montparnasse in her early 20s, Vassilieff became heavily involved in the local artist’s circle. She opened her own Academie Vassilieff and subsequently, in 1915, a canteen for starving artists, which attracted Modigliani, Leger, Matisse, Chagall, Braque and Picasso, among others, and earned her a great reputation. In her canteen, artists gathered to enjoy food and wine, and more importantly, each other’s company. This versatile venue almost became a salon in itself, hosting literary and musical evenings and frequent parties. During this fertile period, Vassilieff worked with a variety of media, including satirical dolls, furniture pieces, drawings, Art Deco posters, and folk and modern paintings. Together with a few other artists, she painted the columns at La Coupole, a favorite gathering spot for artists in Montparnasse. She also exhibited regularly at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Independants. Vassilieff’s own painting style was in turn influenced by primitivism and cubism. Town View with a Horse Carriage, done one year before the artist’s death in 1957, is a landscape painting combining cubist composition, the use of warm and cool color blocks to create light and shadow, and echoing lines and shapes for a sense of foreground, middle ground and background. It is a painting with exceptional mastery of color and space, and represents Vassilieff not as an overly mature artist, but at the apex of her abilities.
