        Nov. 25, 2019

        VASSILIEV, OLEG (1931-2013) A Road

        Est: £35,000 - £50,000

VASSILIEV, OLEG (1931–2013) A Road signed and dated 1988, further inscribed in Cyrillic with a dedication and dated “29-VIII-89” on the reverse. Oil on canvas, 80 by 90 cm. Provenance: Private collection, New York. Contemporary Art Day Sale, Phillips de Pury & Company London, 29 June 2009, lot 173. Private collection, Europe. Oleg Vassiliev’s painting A Road (1988), presented here for auction, is
a milestone work, which the artist painted in his formative years during the search for his artistic credo, described by him as the representation of the space that was close and dear to him. To achieve this goal, the artist uses the image of a road, which appears in many of his works, including In the Field. Abramtsevo (1972), Window (1988) and Path (2001). The art critic Vitaly Patsiukov wrote that Vassiliev’s oeuvre is itself reminiscent of a road, “a way in which every step opens up a further dimension of reality. Whether it lies through a steppe or a forest, whether it is a highway or a track, this is the road that determines a person’s destiny and is full of uncertainty and expectancy.” The artist always treated a road as a way back to the past. Yet it is not just a pursuit of the ghost of bygone days, but rather “the search for an anchorage, an attempt to turn round and face a house from which he once emerged” (quoted from: Oleg Vasiliev. Pamiat govorit, St Petersburg, 2004, p. 66). This desire to unite past and present stems probably from the strong influence exerted on the painter by the philosophy of his mentor Vladimir Favorsky, who maintained that to be truthful, an artist must feel and depict time.

signed with artist's monogram and indistinctly dated ' 95' l.l.; further signed and titled in Latin and dated ' 95' on the reverse oil on canvas Oleg Vassiliev pursued a career as a children’s book illustrator which afforded a living to discretely work on his own projects. In the late 1950s Vassiliev started experimenting and working on his own art and in 1968 he had his first and last solo exhibition in the USSR which lasted only a day and took place at the underground Blue Bird Café on Chekhov Street in Moscow. Vassiliev never considered himself a political artist. The present landscape is a classic example of his principal interest in painterly explorations of light and space. After the disintegration of the Soviet Union, Vassiliev moved to the United States, where for the next fifteen years he would work and exhibit alongside his friends and fellow artists, Erik Bulatov and Ilya Kabakov.

        Est: $70,000 - $90,000

signed and titled in Cyrillic and dated ' 1989' on the reverse oil on canvas ‘We were interested in white as the holy light and as emptiness – not emptiness as death or nothingness, but as… an infinite space of light which is very positive, warm, with sacred energy… This is the metaphysical space in our world.’ (Ilya Kabakov quoted in ‘Memory Speaks (Themes and Variations)’ Oleg Vassiliev, Ilya Kabakov and Erik Bulatov: three names often mentioned in the same breath as being at the heart of Moscow conceptualism at its inception in the late 1960s and early 1970s. All three made their living producing illustrations for Soviet publishing houses while privately pursuing their vocation as independent artists, each facing up to the challenge of how to transcend Soviet reality in their work. Of the three, Vassiliev is the least overtly political in his work. Elegiac, nostalgic, mysterious, metaphysical are all adjectives commonly applied to his paintings, which seem primarily concerned with exploring questions of time, space and light. ‘Light can overcome time as if swimming against the current’ he wrote, and it is this ‘seepage of the transcendental into the here and now’ as Robert Storr puts it, that makes paintings such as ' First Walk after the Winter' so mesmerizing.

        OLEG VASSILIEV | Illumination

        Est: $100,000 - $150,000

signed and titled in Cyrillic and dated ' 1989' on the reverse oil on canvas ‘Illumination’ is one of the most iconic and exciting works by Oleg Vassiliev ever to be offered at auction. It was acquired directly from Phyllis Kind Gallery in SoHo by the present owners in 1989, together with ‘Black Light’ (lot 13) and ‘First Walk After the Winter’ (lot 15). When Phyllis Kind visited the Soviet Union in 1986 she was introduced to a number of underground artists, which led her to mount a series of important exhibitions in her New York space in the late 1980s including ‘Direct from Moscow’ (1987), ‘Behind the Ironic Curtain’ (1989) and a joint show of Erik Bulatov and Oleg Vassiliev’s work in 1989. As Robert Storr remarks in his essay ‘An Enlightened Man in a Dark Time and Place’, this generation of avant-garde artists were not aiming to cut the viewer loose from earthly bonds as the Suprematists had done, nor propel him into a new future era as per the Constructivist manifesto; rather they had look for ways to criticize the present from a place outside of it. ‘For Vassiliev, as for Kabakov and Bulatov, that place was in the margins and corners of the Soviet and post-Soviet universe, those margins being found at the edge of a town or the edge of tangible reality and beyond that in the interstices of perfect mathematical forms and fathomless voids’ (quoted in ‘Oleg Vassiliev, Space and Light’, 2014). In the present work one can just make out the red-star-spangled lights of a Soviet street festival which the central figure is leaving behind to occupy exactly this liminal position ‘at the edge of tangible reality’. The window-shaped forms either side are a recurring feature in Vassiliev’s compositions of this period, and although they are perfectly mathematical, cannot fail to arouse in a viewer some sense of freedom, progress and escape. Vassiliev was one of several artists selected for the Guggenheim’s landmark exhibition ‘RUSSIA!’ in 2005. His painting ‘Before the Sunset’ achieved a record $940,000 (USD equivalent) in 2008 at Sotheby’s London. A visiting artist fund was established in his name at Yale University School of Art in 2012.

        OLEG VASSILIEV | Black Light

        Est: $50,000 - $70,000

signed in Cyrillic and dated ' 80-89'; further signed and titled in Cyrillic and dated ' 1980-1989' on the reverse oil on canvas In ‘Black Light’ we find a generic portrait of a Soviet youth overlaid with the shape that is short-hand for the Russian avant-garde of the 1910s. It has the feel of an archetypal mid-century passport photograph blown up large, the sitter’s features covered and identity denied at the same time as his pre-Soviet heritage is recalled. His direct gaze and lightly raised eyebrow conjure that aura of elegiac inwardness that characterizes Vassiliev’s greatest paintings. A pre-emigration work, ‘Black Light’ is painted on a thick canvas and bears a Soviet export stamp on the reverse. The multiple white lines that comprise the framing technique is a feature of other portraits by Vassiliev, for example ‘Twilight'.

VASSILIEV, OLEG (1931-2013) A Road, signed and dated 1988, further inscribed in Cyrillic with a dedication on the reverse, dated “29-VIII-89” Oil on canvas, 80 by 90 cm. Provenance: Private collection, New York. Contemporary Art Day Sale, Phillips de Pury & Company London, 29 June 2009, lot 173. Acquired at the above sale by the present owner. Important private collection, Europe. Oleg Vassiliev’s painting A Road (1988), presented here for auction, is a milestone work, which the artist painted in his formative years during the search for his artistic credo, described by him as the representation of the space that was close and dear to him.
