"Ben", BEN VAUTIER (Naples, 1935). "Life is competition". Silkscreen on 270 grams Vélin d'Arches paper, copy 69/250. Signed and justified by hand. Measurements: 63 x 90 cm. Benjamin Vautier has been, besides being a visual artist, a public agitator and art critic, interested in social vindication and multiculturalism. For him all art must mean a shock, produce an intense emotion or reaction, and be novel. Although he was born in Naples, his childhood would be spent between this city, Turkey, Egypt, Greece and Italy. In 1949 he moved to Nice, where he spent most of his career. The contact in Nice with artists like Fontan, Malaval, Klein or Arman would be fundamental in the configuration of his style. In the 60's he would travel to New York where he would participate in the actions of the Fluxus group. His work would also be impregnated with conceptualism and minimalism, essential in his conception of art, which for him is not a purpose, but a vehicle, a form of communication.The Olympic Suite is composed of 50 lithographs and serigraphs chosen to represent various contemporary artistic trends. It was published to commemorate the first centenary of modern Olympism. The chosen artists are defined by diverse movements and pictorial currents, from the conceptualism and minimalism of "Ben" Vautier, the lyrical abstraction of Yasse Tabuchi, the painting of Oleg Tselkov who concentrates on the human figure, intensely expressive and treated with forceful forms and intense colors that seek to reflect the conflicts and violence of his time, and finally the work of André Arabis, clearly abstract and geometric.

Benjamin Vautier (1829–1898) war sein Urgrossvater, Karl Vautier (1860–1910) und Otto Vautier (1863–1919) seine Grossonkel. Seine Familie liess sich 1949 in Nizza nieder. Dort betrieb Vautier zwischen 1958 und 1973 den Schallplattenladen "Magasin", der durch seine Fassade mit zahlreichen grellen Schriftzügen auffiel. In dieser Zeit gehörte Vautier zu den führenden Vertretern der Fluxus-Bewegung. Seine Auseinandersetzung mit Schrift und Signatur gipfelte in einer Aktion, bei der er alles, was er sah, signierte, auch Werke anderer Künstler oder seinen Körper. Charakteristisch für seine Kunst sind jedoch die Schriftbilder, also Werke mit Schriftzügen auf monochromem Grund. Dabei kann es sich um kurze Aussagen oder längere Kompositionen handeln. 1992 sorgte er im Schweizer Pavillon an der Weltausstellung in Sevilla mit dem Text "Suiza no existe" auf einem Gemälde (ein Werk, das unser Haus 2003 versteigern durfte) für Aufsehen. Vorliegend ein längerer Text, dessen einzelne Worte in unterschiedlichen Farben geschrieben sind und Gegensätze markieren. Ben Vautier came from the Swiss Vautier dynasty of artists. Benjamin Vautier (1829-1898) was his great-grandfather, Karl Vautier (1860-1910) and Otto Vautier (1863-1919) his great-uncles. His family settled in Nice in 1949. Between 1958 and 1973, Vautier ran the "Magasin" record shop there, which stood out with its façade featuring numerous brightly coloured lettering. During this time, Vautier was one of the leading representatives of the Fluxus movement. His exploration of writing and signatures culminated in an action in which he signed everything he saw, including works by other artists and his own body. Characteristic of his art, however, are the typefaces, i.e. works with lettering on a monochrome background. These can be short statements or longer compositions. In 1992, he caused a sensation with the text "Suiza no existe" on a painting in the Swiss pavilion at the World Exhibition in Seville (we had the honour of auctioning this work in 2003). This is a longer text, the individual words of which are written in different colours, creating contrasts.
