Chana Orloff 2 Autographs in Hebrew on 2 photos of her sculptures made by Marc Vaux with his studio stamp, 1930, Paris

        Est: -

Chana Orloff, Sculptor 2 Autographs in Hebrew on 2 photos of her sculptures made by French photographer Marc Vaux with his studio stamp, 1930, Paris. ORIGINAL SIGNED PHOTOS OF MARC VAUX , WITH STAMP OF PHOTOGRAPHER ON REVERSE SIDE “JEWISH WOMEN” 1930 ( DATE OF CREATION) These items come from archive of Gabriel J.Talphir TALPHIR, GABRIEL JOSEPH (1901–1990), Hebrew art critic and poet. Talphir was born in Stanislav, Galicia, and after teaching in secondary schools in Vilna and Zamosc immigrated to Palestine in 1925, and from 1932 became editor of Gazit, a periodical for art and literature. He published poems in Israel’s newspapers and literary journals, as well as essays and articles on literature and art, mostly in Gazit, perhaps the first periodical in Hebrew devoted MARC VAUX (born 1932 Swindon) is a British artist who rose to prominence in the 1960s. His work was included in the seminal Situation exhibition of 1960 alongside Robyn Denny, William Turnbull Bernard Cohen among others. This exhibition was a direct reaction by British abstract artists to the recent exhibitions in London of the American Abstract Expressionists in particular the Tate’s 1959 exhibition The New American Painting. Although originally headed for a career in Chemistry, Vaux eventually studied at the Slade School of Fine Art from 1957 to 1960 where he was awarded a Boise traveling scholarship which allowed him to travel in Italy, and later to work at the Jean Ponsa lithographic printing studio in Paris. In 1986 after a long teaching career he was appointed Head of Painting at the Central/St Martins College of Art and Design in London where he stayed until he retired in 1989 to concentrate full time on painting. Vaux’s work has variously been described as minimalist and constructivist although since his primary interest is in colour and light he has more in common with the American west coast artists than the New York minimalists. It [colour] is known to have a direct effect upon the central nervous system/human sensibility, arguably the most effective modifiers of human response, over sound and touch. It is dynamic – dependent on degree of colour, light, surrounding colours. Given the facts it is surprising it has taken so long to come to the position of recognising the effective power of colour alone – the endless potential of colour alone to communicate, affect and modify response.. it can be a pure visual experience equivalent to any other (experience). The nearest equivalent would be the sound of music. I see no reason why colour can’t equate with melody and be as memorable. After all Albers wrote poems to equate with his paintings. Marc Vaux. In 2005 a monograph on Marc Vaux written by Vaux’s long term supporter Norbert Lynton was published by 21 Publishing. The Tate Gallery holds a good collection of Vaux’s work from 1959 to the present day. The collection is currently on display at Tate Britain. Vaux’s first commercial gallery exhibition was at the Grabowski Gallery in London with his then wife Tess Jaray. He was subsequently represented by the Axiom Gallery, Anderson O’Day and then the Redfern Gallery, since 1998 Marc Vaux has been represented by the London art dealer Bernard Jacobson and has had regular exhibitions there. CHANA ORLOFF (1888–1968) was a Ukraine-born Israeli figurative sculptor. Chana Orloff was born in Ukraine. She immigrated to Ottoman Palestine in 1905 and settled in Jaffa, where she found a job as a cutter and seamstress. Zvi Nishri (Orloff), the pioneer in physical education in Israel, was her brother. She joined Hapoel Hatzair workers movement. After five years in the country, she was offered a teaching position in cutting and dressmaking at Gymnasia Herzliya. She went to Paris to study fashion but chose art instead, enrolled in sculpture classes at the Académie Russe in Montparnasse. In 1916, she married Ary Justman, a Warsaw-born writer and poet. The couple had a son, but Ary died of influenza in the epidemic of 1919. When the Nazis invaded Paris, Orloff fled to Switzerland with her son and the Jewish painter Georges Kars. In February 1945, Kars committed suicide in Geneva, after which Orloff returned to Paris with her son, to find that her house had been ransacked and the sculptures in her studio destroyed. Orloff died in Israel on December 16, 1968 In Paris, Orloff became friendly with other young Jewish artists, among them Marc Chagall, Jacques Lipchitz, Amedeo Modigliani, Pascin, Chaim Soutine, and Ossip Zadkine. In 1913, she exhibited in the Salon d’Automne. After the establishment of the State of Israel, Orloff began spending an increasing amount of time there. The Tel Aviv Museum of Art held an exhibition of 37 of her sculptures in 1949. She remained in Israel for about a year in order to complete a sculpture of David Ben-Gurion, The Hero Monument to the defenders of Ein Gev and The Motherhood Monument in memory of Chana Tuckman who died during the Israeli War of Independence. In addition to monuments, Orloff sculpted portraits of Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion and future Prime Minister Levi Eshkol; the architects Pierre Chareau, and Auguste Perret; painters Henri Matisse, Amedeo Modigliani, Pablo Picasso, and Per Krohg; and the poets Hayyim Nahman Bialik, and Pierre Mac Orlan.
