Rare and Important Mezzotint After John Verelst

      Est: $8,000 - $12,000

(Dutch/English, 1648-1734) Sa Ga Yeath Qua Pieth Tow, King of the Maquas Jean (John) Simon, engraver, publisher, and "Printed for Bowles & Son at the Black Horse in Cornhill, London," 1710, sheet 14 x 10-1/4 in.; parcel gilt painted wood frame, 23-7/8 x 20 x 1-1/8 in. Provenance: W. Graham Arader III, King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, purchased for $21,500 (accompanied by receipt, and with label verso); Private New England Collection Note: The portrait this mezzotint is after is of a series of four titled Four Indian Kings which is currently held by the Public Archives of Canada. The sitter for this specific portrait, Sa Ga Yeath Qua Pieth Tow, was a Mohawk (Maqua) Chief of the Iroquois Confederacy. He was also a member of the Bear Clan, which is referenced in the piece by the bear cub standing at his side. On the trip during which the original work was painted, he was also baptized, taking the new name Peter Brant. The portrait is also of considerable anthropological significance, as Brant's elaborate tattoos are one of the best extant records of Native American tattoo work. Their significance, while not definitively known, presumably reflect his status as a chief and skill as a warrior.

    • 1699 William III period, Oil Painting by Verelst of Baron of the Exchequer, Nicholas Lechmere.(1613-1701)
      Sep. 18, 2022

1699 William III period, Oil Painting by Verelst of Baron of the Exchequer, Nicholas Lechmere.(1613-1701)

      Est: $4,000 - $6,000

1699 William III period, Oil Painting by Verelst(?) of Baron of the Exchequer, Nicholas Lechmere.(1613-1701) John Verelst (1648-1734) , born and known also as Johannes or Jan, was a Dutch Golden Age painter. He was the youngest of three sons of the painter Pieter Hermansz Verelst; all became known as painters. Most notably, he painted the portraits of the four "Mohauk Kings", emissaries from Canadian First Peoples to Queen Anne. These paintings were eventually given to Canada by Queen Elizabeth, and in 2010 a Canadian postage stamp featured the images. This painting is signed J Verelst and dated 1699 on the middle right. The painting and frame are certainly late 17th century. After Queen Mary died Willam III reigned alone. The signature and date are likely to be genuine, but aggrandizement has certainly been known in the past. Sir Nicholas Lechmere (1613-1701) of Hanley Castle, Worcestershire, studied law at Oxford, and pursued a glittering legal and parliamentary career, ending up as Baron of the Exchequer until 1700. His descendants had exciting and notable lives themselves, one being refugeed out of Halifax, as the American War of Independence concluded. He lost all his plantations in the American colonies, being on the British side, but was still, fortunately, not poor. He lived in exile, opulently, in Britain. The fabulous original, intricately carved wood, late 17th century frame is 96 cm tall and 83 cm wide.
