NIKOLAUS WIRD VOM KLERUS VON MYRA EMPFANGEN Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 59 x 96 cm. Ungerahmt. Literatur: Vgl. Remigio Marini, L‘opera completa del Veronese, Mailand 1968, S. 127. (1400732) (13)

RICARD CLAUSELLS (Reus, 1864 - Sant Feliu de Llobregat, 1939). After PAOLO VERONESE (1528-1588). "The dispute of the doctors in the temple", 1900. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower left corner.

          Est: €3,000 - €4,000

RICARD CLAUSELLS (Reus, 1864 - Sant Feliu de Llobregat, 1939). After PAOLO VERONESE (1528-1588). "The dispute of the doctors in the temple", 1900. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower left corner. Measurements: 135 x 230 cm; 170 x 267 cm (frame). Ricard Clausells reproduces with singular technical and compositional skill the homonymous painting of Veronese preserved in the Prado Museum. The classical monumentality of the figures, their perfect integration in the architectural frame, the right chromatic ranges that enhance the volumes and the gestural dramaturgy, are characteristics that Clausells learned from Veronese and succeeds in transmitting. In the scene, the anecdote of the last passage of Christ's childhood (Luke 2, 41-50), when at the age of twelve he was taken by his parents to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover. Mary and Joseph lost the child, who was later found in the Temple arguing with the doctors. Christ's theological superiority is emphasized by his placement high on the axis of the composition. With his hands he makes a gesture, the so-called digital computation, of enumeration of the arguments put forward before the eyes of the doctors. From the auditorium stands out a bearded old man, who is probably the client. He wears the habit of a knight of the Holy Sepulchre and holds a pilgrim's staff, which suggests that he may have commissioned the painting to commemorate a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Ricard Clausells began his training in 1878 studying at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona and later at the Llotja School. In 1893 he gave painting classes at his home, and in 1897, he edited the second issue of Reus Tranquilo, as he had friends in that city. Between 1900 and 1913 he collaborated in the Semanario Católico de Reus, especially with poems that he sent from Vilafranca, both in Catalan and Spanish. His pictorial work is linked to Vilafranca del Penedès, as he lived there for many years. The City Council commissioned him to create paintings of the illustrious sons of the city, and in 1901 the Gallery of illustrious Vilafranquins was inaugurated. In 1910 he went to live permanently in Sant Feliu with his mother. In this town he painted several religious paintings for churches in Sant Feliu and Vilafranca. From 1915 he decorated the ceiling of the Hall of Sessions of the Town Hall of Vilafranca. When his mother died in 1917, he gave drawing and painting classes at the Asilo Duran, a reform school in Sant Feliu. In 1923 he married Josefina Sanromà from Reus in Barcelona. He did not stop making exhibitions, both in Vilafranca and Sant Feliu and also in Barcelona.

Venetian School, modelled on PAOLO VERONESE (Verona, 1528 - Venice, 1588). ‘Martyrdom of Saint Justina’. Oil on canvas. Re-coloured. It presents faults in the pictorial surface.

Venetian School, modelled on PAOLO VERONESE (Verona, 1528 - Venice, 1588). ‘Martyrdom of Saint Justina’. Oil on canvas. Re-coloured. It presents faults in the pictorial surface. Measurements: 97 x 75,5 cm; 117 x 87 cm (frame). This painting follows the model of the work painted by Veronese, which is in the main altar of the basilica Santa Giustina in Padua. Veronese portrayed Saint Justina of Padua on several occasions. It is in this work, however, that he displays the greatest sumptuousness and scenographic complexity. Perhaps its privileged location led Veronese to intricate the depiction of the martyrdom of the saint, who is almost hidden among the number of characters that populate the scene, with various earthly and heavenly entourages swirling around the protagonist. Numerous engravings were made of this work, which spread the mastery of the composition. An example of this is the engraving belonging to the Valparaíso collection by Agostino Carracci. In this painting the artist follows the original model, although he allows himself certain licences that add originality to the painting. Venetian Baroque painting was a transforming force for much of the rest of the European schools, and masters such as Rubens, Velázquez and Van Dyck succumbed to the works produced by this school during the 16th and 17th centuries. The vibrant colouring, the fluidity and strength of the brushstroke and a passionate movement full of gestures and theatricality made it a landmark often imitated. The great painters such as Titian, Tintoretto, Bassano and, more closely related to us, Veronese, championed this vision. Veronese, like his contemporaries, maintained elaborate compositions in which the scenes seem to move on their own. The loose, almost pure brushstrokes give the sensation of immediacy and lead us to an energetic vision in which the colour unfolds, shining with flashes of red in contrast with a blue that is lost to black and suddenly shines through to lead white. All this colourfulness and fluency are expressed in Veronese's luxuriousness. A precious treatment of fabrics, jewels and textures emanates from each of the elements in the painting. In the case of our painting this is clearly evident.

BIOGRAPHY: An eminent painter of the Venetian school; born at Verona, 1528; died at Venice, 19 April, 1588, Paolo Caliari was the son of a sculptor, Gabriele Caliari, and was at first educated in his father's craft, but his taste was towards painting; and he entered the studio of Antonio Badile, a Veronese painter of some repute. His first works were executed at Verona, and at Mantua, and at Castelfranco. In the last-named place he decorated the Villa Soranzo with large frescoes. His most famous works are elaborate narrative cycles, executed in a dramatic and colorful style, full of majestic architectural settings and glittering pageantry. His large paintings of biblical feasts, crowded with figures, painted for the refectories of monasteries in Venice and Verona are especially famous, and he was also the leading Venetian painter of ceilings. Most of these works remain in situ, or at least in Venice, and his representation in most museums is mainly composed of smaller works such as portraits that do not always show him at his best or most typical. He has always been appreciated for "the chromatic brilliance of his palette, the splendor and sensibility of his brushwork, the aristocratic elegance of his figures, and the magnificence of his spectacle", but his work has been felt "not to permit expression of the profound, the human, or the sublime", and of the "great trio" he has often been the least appreciated by modern criticism. Nonetheless, "many of the greatest artists ... may be counted among his admirers, including Rubens, Watteau, Tiepolo, Delacroix, and Renoir".

Paolo Caliari called il Veronese (Verona 1528 - Venice 1588) workshop of Allegory of strength and prudence Oil on canvas 127 x 91 cm The canvas, due to its stylistic fidelity can be traced back to the master's workshop, or rather to the followers who carried on his atelier after his death and who sometimes signed themselves: Heredes Pauli Caliari Veronensis. Guided by their uncle Benedetto, the Veronese's two eldest sons, Gabriele and Carlo Caliari, kept the family workshop alive at least until the middle 17th century, sometimes signing their artworks collectively.
