      Est: €4,000 - €5,000

PORTRAIT EINES ELEGANT GEKLEIDETEN HERREN MIT SOLDATEN IM HINTERGRUND Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 121 x 90 cm. In dekorativem vergoldeten Rahmen. (1251991) (1) (18)

    • Johannes Cornelisz. Verspronck, Portrait of a Young Lady
      Nov. 19, 2016

Johannes Cornelisz. Verspronck, Portrait of a Young Lady

      Est: €20,000 - €30,000

Signed and dated lower left: J v Spronck ano 1643 Aetatis 29With four old paper labels and a red varnish seal to the back of the stretcher: “Galerie Sedelmeyer Paris”.Johannes Verspronck was the most important portrait painter in Haarlem alongside Frans Hals, in whose workshop he may have apprenticed. His portraits were generally commissioned by Haarlem's wealthy burghers, and depict their sitters in modest, sombre clothing. Only two of Verspronck's known portraits display a more vivid colour palette: The portrait of Andries Stilte as a Standard Bearer (kept in the National Gallery of Art in Washington since 1998) and a portrait of a young girl in a pale blue robe (in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam), which were painted two and three years after the present work (respectively). This portrait is typical of Verspronck's oeuvre and depicts a young girl in austere black clothing and unadorned by jewellery before a dark brown background. The backdrop provides no architectural details, but can be interpreted as an interior due to the graduations of light and shadow. The dark overall palette contrasts sharply with the white of the bonnet, the round collar, and the pale flesh tones of the girl's face and hand. The defining characteristic of Verspronck's portraits is the sense of dignity of grace exuded by their sitters. This effect derives in part from the modest and almost ascetic countenance lent to them by the artist, which still manages to convey their higher rank. The composition of the present work, in which the young lady is shown facing left but looking towards the beholder and making direct eye contact, is reiterated in a portrait of a slightly older lady painted in the same year which is today kept in the Museum of Fine Art in Boston. Like the Boston piece, the present work presumably also had a pendent depicting the young lady's husband.

Two paintings, oil on canvas, relined Holland, circa 1655 Attributed to Jan Cornelisz. Verspronck (1600/03-1662) – Dutch genre painter and portrayer Back with an inventory number ‘No. 148 ‘(male portrait) or ‘No. 149’ (female portrait) On both stretchers with labels by the art dealer P. de Boer, Amsterdam with attribution to Nicolaes Maes Certificate by Prof. Dr. Werner Sumowski, Stuttgart, dated April 25, 2004 Dimensions: 97.2 x 80 cm Provenance: Collection Seger Tierens (1743); Cremer Gallery, Brussels; Collections W. Geldner, Meiningen (c. 1830), C. Geldner, Basel, Max Geldner, Basel; Collection M. Schulthess, Basel; Kunsthandel Pieter de Boer, Amsterdam (1963); The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Hartford, Connecticut (from 1965); Private collection, Southern Germany (from 2004) Two portraits of a Dutch couple boasting an extremely fine execution, attributed to Jan Cornelisz. Verspronck; Verspronck is considered a talented portraitist from the Dutch Golden Age This pair of portraits is attributed to the Dutch portrait painter Jan Cornelisz. Verspronck. One painting depicts an elderly gentleman in an armchair before a neutral background. The counterpart depicts his wife in a similar setting. Both wear a plain black costume with a white collars, typical for the mid-17th century. Here, for instance, the detailed elaboration of the trimmings to the bodice of the woman’s dress testifies to the virtuosity of the artist who perfectly mastered the oil technique. The painter succeeded in rendering the smooth texture of the flowing black robes in contrast to the slightly rougher texture of the colorful velvet cushions and leather-covered backrests. The delicate flesh tones stand out against the dark background in very nuanced manner. Both faces, marked by life, as well as the hands are of an outstanding painterly quality. The man's face is reminiscent of Verspronck’s ‘Portrait of John Schoterbiosch’ from 1647 and also the lady shows similarities with other female portraits by the artist. With an assessment from Prof. Dr. Werner Sumowski, Stuttgart, dated April 25, 2004. Sumowski attributes the two paintings to Johannes Cornelisz. Verspronck (1597-1662) and dates them no later than 1655 based on the costumes and the manner of painting. He supplements the provenance information provided by the RKD. The paintings are listed in the online database of the RKD under the artwork number 59916 as Northern Netherlands, c. 1665. Here the attribution to Nicolaes Maes, successor of Thomas de Keyser and the attribution to Johannes Cornelisz. Verspronck is rejected. Literature: E. Haverkamp-Begemann (ed.), Wadsworth Atheneum Paintings, Catalogue I, 1978, p. 168, no. 105 and 106 with ill. The two paintings are in good overall condition. The canvases are both relined. There are some retouchings to the background and to the figures in places as well as fine craquelure. The lady’s portrait with a retouching to the background on the left next to the face. The frames show some wear. The framed works measure 115 x 98 cm, the stretcher frames each measures 97.2 x 80 cm. Jan Cornelisz. Verspronck (1600/03-1662) Jan Cornelisz. Verspronck was born in Haarlem and was initially taught by his father, a portrait painter. He was presumably also a pupil of Frans Hals, who was also active in Haarlem. The latter’s influence is visible throughout Verspronck’s oeuvre. In 1632 he became a member of the Haarlem Guild of St. Luke. He developed a sober, restrained style of painting, which earned him numerous commissions from the mostly Catholic population of his hometown. Verspronck was particularly productive between 1940 and 1943. Overall, his oeuvre comprises around 100 portraits. These are characterized by a fine painting quality and a meticulous rendering of details, such as the lace on the clothing or the jeweler of his female sitters.
