(Gorinchem 1594–1641 Amsterdam) Skaters on the ice, monogrammed lower right: AVS (ligated), oil on panel, 13.2 x 21.7 cm, framed Provenance: sale, Mak van Waay, Amsterdam, 4 December 1928, lot 96; with Galerie Hans Bammann, Düsseldorf, 1929; Private collection, Germany Exhibited: Aachen, Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum, Chambre Privée. The works of Anthonie Verstraelen have frequently been misattributed to Hendrick Avercamp, the renowned painter and developer of the winter scene genre. Lot number 28 in this auction offers a painting by Avercamp and an assistant. Apart from some archival records, little is known about Verstraelen. Considering the artist’s body of work he undoubtedly was inspired by the paintings of Avercamp and shared a preference for picturesque details and carefully crafted figures. As noted by Peter van den Brink (see literature), the present painting has been acknowledged as an authentic work by the artist as early as 1928, when the Düsseldorf art dealer Hans Bammann (1901–1945) acquired it at auction (see provenance). In this relatively small work, Verstraelen depicted a winter landscape with a low horizon and a perspective enhanced by the diagonal line of the ice skaters. Similar works by the artist are conserved in the Niedersächsisches Landesmuseum in Hanover (inv. no. PAM 756), and in the Fondation Custodia, Collection Frits Lugt in Paris (inv. no. 2629), of which the latter is monogrammed and dated 1634. Verstraelen’s later works stand out from his earlier compositions due to their less precise brushwork, smaller size, and monochromatic colour palette. These characteristics are present in the work offered here and it is for this reason that Van den Brink dates the work to 1635–40. These observations suggest that the artist shifted towards working for the free art market and less under commission in the latter part of his career. This theory suggested by Van den Brink aligns with the deaths of contemporaries Hendrick Avercamp, Esaias van de Velde, and Arent Arentsz. called Cabel, who were all active in the same genre.

ANTHONIE VERSTRAELEN (Gorkum circa 1593–1641 Amsterdam) Winter landscape with figures enjoying the ice. 1632. Oil on panel. Monogrammed and dated lower right: AVS 1632. 32.7 × 46.8 cm. Provenance: - Probably collection of Joachim Durandeau (1835–1915), Dijon, 1913. - Sale Drouot, Paris, 22.2.1913, Lot 11 (as Hendrick Avercamp). - Collection of Adrien Dollfus (1858–1921), Paris, until 1921. - Collection of Jean Dollfus (1891–1983), Paris, Lyons-la-Forêt, until 1978. - Given as a gift, private collection, Germany, 1978. - European private collection. --------------- ANTHONIE VERSTRAELEN (Gorkum um 1593–1641 Amsterdam) Winterlandschaft mit Eisvergnügen. 1632. Öl auf Holz. Unten rechts monogrammiert und datiert: AVS 1632. 32,7 × 46,8 cm. Provenienz: - wohl Sammlung Joachim Durandeau (1835–1915), Dijon, 1913.

THE PROPERTY OF A DUTCH FAMILY A WINTER LANDSCAPE WITH ELEGANT FIGURES SKATING AND A COUPLE IN A HORSE-DRAWN SLEIGH ON THE ICE measurements note 26.9 by 40.9 cm. signed in monogram lower right: AVS (in ligature) oil on panel PROVENANCE With Willem Sloot, Amsterdam (according to a label on the frame); Anonymous sale, Cologne, Lempertz, 14-16 December 1922, lot 141 (as Hendrick Avercamp). NOTE A native of the provincial town of Gorinchem, Verstraelen moved to Amsterdam before 1628 and specialised in painting winter scenes with figures skating on frozen lakes and rivers (although a single Summer landscape has recently surfaced, sold in these Rooms, 18 May 2004, lot 105). He must have been influenced by Hendrick Avercamp (1585-1634), whose innovations in the depiction of winter scenes Verstraelen incorporated fully into his works. Verstraelen executed his winter landscapes very much in the tradition of Avercamp, characteristic both in its high viewpoint and the inclusion of various narrative elements, which together gives such winter scenes rather the air of tableaux vivants. Verstraelen's thin and draftsman-like brushwork is reminiscent of the Flemish followers of Pieter Brueghel the Elder (active 1551-1569), like David Vinckboons (1576-c.1632). The artist effectively evokes a wintery atmosphere through his rendering of tempered sunlight, strong enough to cast shadow next to the figures, and reflections in the ice, but filtered through a haze that dissolves the distant view. The horizontal expanse of the ice thus dominates the landscape.
