From the mid-1920s onwards the workshops produced colorful wooden toys, made by the patients of a sanatorium. Verzuu’s designs were primarily inspired by the great artists of the time, such as Gerrit Rietveld and Piet Mondrian. The clean lines and reduced colors of the dollhouse furniture reflect the influence of De Stijl. The present wardrobe features a pull-out clothes rail on the left and a drawer with 3 shelves on the right. Whereas trucks and wooden blocks are more common, the doll cabinet is rare to find – especially in this beautiful color scheme. The wardrobe is in good condition with signs of wear consistent with age and use. There are minor paint losses here and there. The dimensions are 41.5 x 36.5 x 18 cm (height x width x depth). Ko Verzuu (1901 - 1971) Ko Verzuu (1901 - 1971) began as a construction supervisor at the Utrecht municipality, and went on to work in the ADO workshops from 1925 to 1933 where he produced wooden toys such as cars, furniture, boxes, building blocks, trains, dolls and cots. He was the designer of the so-called “coveted toys”, with a strong background in architecture and the visual arts and a preference for designs with simple abstract lines and bright colors in keeping with the style of the times. This group of artists and architects made toys through the early 1930’s using primary colors such as red, blue and yellow. The ADO dolls' furniture was strongly inspired by the bright colors and simple lines of Geriit Rietveld and was featured in all the better stores such as Metz & Co. In 1933 the movement regained life, opening workshops in Apeldoorn to Bilthoven, where the ADO toys were made for many years until 1950 when the demand for wooden toys was replaced by demand for metal trains and cars.
