As a result, honest wear from use is to be expected and is sometimes the proof that an item is an antique. Normal wear will not be noted in the description. e) Artwork: Because artwork is known to be copied from pre-existing examples, the dating of such objects is often difficult to ascertain and opinions vary from expert to expert. It is possible that an item could go to another bidder for the same amount as your absentee bid. For example, if your maximum Internet bid on an item is $325.00 and the required opening bid is $300.00, the Internet auction software will only bid $300.00 since that is all that is required to start the Auction. The Auction begins with you at $300.00. The next increment would be $325.00, if no one else bids you will be declared the winner. If a live auction bidder bids $325.00, they are at $325.00, not you. We always encourage bidders to bid by phone or to leave absentee bids through our gallery to avoid this. Occasionally, the bidding software or your internet connection may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction or the floor may respond before the internet bid is presented to the auctioneer. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid for the live Internet auction before the auction begins as insurance to avoid this. Occasionally, the Auctioneer may eliminate or reject an Internet bid, or the auctioneer may reopen a lot after the close of the live internet bidding. In this case, we may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via the internet, you agree that RBFineArts CFL Inc. may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Internet bids are treated just like floor bids. The Auctioneer reserves the right to reject any bids that are deemed inappropriate or withdraw any item before or during the sale. Some of the items in this Auction are subject to a reserve. The reserve is a confidential minimum price agreed upon by both the consignor and RBFineArts CFL Inc. Buyers should assume that all listed items are reserved unless otherwise stated. We reserve the right to bid on behalf of consignors up to, but not more than, the reserve to protect against selling at a price below the reserve. Attributed to GABRIEL VIARDOT (Paris, 1830-1906). Pair of oriental dragons, ca. 1900. In carved wood. Measurements: 50 x 9 x 9 cm. Pair of expressive carvings in the form of mythological dragons. They respond to a design that coincides with the zoomorphic frames of mirrors that Gabriel Viardot made in numerous occasions. It also presents a style similar to that of other sculptures that decorated the furniture of this cabinetmaker, known for his reinterpretations of Asian iconography. Gabriel Viardot was a cabinetmaker who specialized in the production of furniture of the "Chinese-Japanese genre". He began his career as a wood sculptor in 1849, when he sent some pieces of naturalistic decorative furniture to the horticultural exhibition. He then became the head of a small team of sculptors when he was only 19 years old. In 1853, he had a factory and a furniture store located in Rambuteau. At this time, Gabriel Viardot worked with his brother Louis Gustave under the name "Viardot Brothers and Co." In 1860, he opened his own workshop, "G. Viardot "in Grand-Chantier, a family business that he maintained until 1872. He decided to devote himself to "Chinese-Japanese style furniture", which he was able to see predominantly at the 1867 World's Fair. At this same exhibition, Viardot won four medals. It is with this production that he was awarded a silver medal at the 1878 World's Fair. His furniture was produced thanks to lacquered and carved panels sent directly from China or Japan and decorated with mother-of-pearl inlays from Tonkin. Of the bronze ornaments he made all the designs by hand. Over the years, his success continued to grow, especially at the Nice exhibitions and the eighth exhibition of the Central Union of Decorative Arts in 1884. In 1885, it participated in the Antwerp World Exhibition, where it won a gold medal. At this time, the store employed 90 to 100 workers, sculptors or cabinetmakers. After this exhibition, Viardot was promoted to the rank of Chevalier in the Legion of Honor (December 29, 1885). In 1889, he participated in the World Exhibition held in Paris and received a gold medal. He obtained the same award at the 1900 World's Fair.

GABRIEL VIARDOT (Paris, 1830-1906). Vitrine, ca.1890. In stained beech wood and bronze. Measurements: 192 x 110 x 40 cm. Cabinet-display cabinet designed by the French cabinetmaker Gabriel Viardot. It alternates spaces with cupboard in its light structure, by means of a distribution of hollows and fillings that breaks the classical symmetry at the same time that it is inspired by chinoiseries with the bronze dragons and the crests that decorate each shelf. It is a design akin to contemporary modernism but imbued with Orientalist echoes which Viardot freely reinterprets. He used pagoda architecture as a reference point for the eaves ridge. The openwork tracery motif is repeated in the corners of the shelves. Gabriel Viardot was a cabinetmaker specialising in the production of furniture of the "Chinese-Japanese genre". He began his career as a wood sculptor in 1849, when he sent some pieces of naturalistic decorative furniture to the horticultural exhibition. He then became the head of a small team of sculptors when he was only 19 years old. In 1853, he had a factory and a furniture shop located in Rambuteau. At this time, Gabriel Viardot worked with his brother Louis Gustave under the name "Viardot Brothers and Co.". In 1860, he opened his own workshop, "G. Viardot" in Grand-Chantier, a family business which he maintained until 1872. He decided to devote himself to "Sino-Japanese style furniture", which he saw predominantly at the 1867 World's Fair. At the same exhibition, Viardot won four medals. It was for this production that he was awarded a silver medal at the 1878 World's Fair. In 1885, he took part in the World Exhibition in Antwerp, where he won a gold medal. At this time, the shop employed 90 to 100 workers, sculptors or cabinetmakers. After this exhibition, Viardot was promoted to the rank of Chevalier in the Legion of Honour (29 December 1885). In 1889, he took part in the World Exhibition in Paris and received a gold medal. He won the same prize at the 1900 World's Fair.
