      Sep. 10, 2016

      Jehan-Georges Vibert, Les Amoreux Langoureux..

      Est: $5,000 - $7,000

Vibert, Jehan-Georges (France, 1840-1902). Les Amoreux Langoureux / Languid Lovers. Oil on canvas. Signed l.l. J G Vibert 67. 38 3/8" x 29 3/8". Frame: 42" x 37 3/8". During his long and prolific career, Vibert was recognized as one of France’s most accomplished academic painters. His sense of drama permitted him to write plays and to poke fun at Bishops, Archbishops, and Cardinals of the Catholic Church in France enjoying the good life of the second half of the nineteenth century. Vibert debuted his work at the Salon of 1863 and continued to submit to these important exhibitions until 1899. As the popularity of his works spread, notably in America, they obtained high prices, including commissions from important collectors like John Jacob Astor IV and William Vanderbilt. It was particularly useful for art historians, museum curators, and collectors that he published in 1902, a complete autobiography, La Comédie en Peinture. An exceptionally large and fine example of his Spanish period is our Les Amoreux Langoureux/Languid Lovers, which was illustrated in Vol. II, Book XIII, p. 73.
