      Alejo Vidal-Quadras 1919-1994, Spain "Portrait of Nancy Osborne Chapman and Her Daughter Sally Chapman" charcoal on paper signed lower right and dated '61, matted and framed under glass. Sold along with a group of gallery exhibition programs and newspaper clippings about the artist. Alejo Vidal-Quadras was from a well-established Barcelona family that had seen its fortunes somewhat diminished by the Spanish Civil War. Vidal-Quadras trained at his great uncle's art academy as well as the Barcelona Fine Arts School and University of Barcelona, where he studied law. Following his parents' divorce, Vidal-Quadras moved with his mother and brother to South America during World War II. In 1947 Vidal-Quadras decided to return to Europe to try to make it in Paris as an artist. He met his lifelong friend Emma Reyes on the boat headed for Europe, and the pair set up a shared studio in Paris. By 1949 Vidal-Quadras had his first exhibition and a promising career as a portraitist. He received many portrait commissions from royal families and other famous subjects including Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, and Maria Callas. He also did many private commissions and exhibited at the Wally Findlay Galleries. In 1977 he married the journalist Marie-Charlotte Pedrazzini. Vidal-Quadras had so many American commissions that in the 1980s they decided to purchase a second home in Palm Beach, Florida, which is where this double portrait was completed. sight image 39 1/2" high, 28 3/4" wide, framed.

      Aleix (Alejo) Vidal-Quadras (Spanish, b. 1919), the 4 Faces of Merle Oberon, black and brown charcoal on paper, signed lower left and dated '59, 39" x 26 3/4", 48" x 36" (mat). Quadras was a famous portrait painter of the 1940's, 50's, and 60's and he painted prominent aristocrats in Europe. This pieces was painted in 1959 after Merle Oberon married the Mexican industrialist Bruno Pagliai.
