Maria Helena VIEIRA da SILVA: Abstract - M/M

      Est: $6,000 - $8,000

Abstract mixed media work on paper, circa 1955, by Maria Helena Veiera da Silva (Portuguese, 1908-1992), signed "Veiera da Silva" lower left. By the early 1940s, the artist was already established as one of the defining cultural figures of the 20th century. She was featured in Peggy Guggenheim’s Exhibition by 31 Women at the Art of This Century in New York. In 1961, she won the Grand Prize for Fine Arts at the Biennale in Sao Paulo and in 1966, was the first woman awarded the French Grand Prix Nationale des Arts. Her works are in the permanent collections of several major institutions such as MoMA, the Tate, and Centre Pompidou, etc., her place as a postwar staple has stood the test of time. Vieira da Silva’s early career in Paris among the avant-garde of postwar abstractionists led to a storied contribution to modern painting. In Paris, she worked and lived among Cubist and Italian Futurists, whose styles became influential to her later signature style of maze-like tiling and depth-of-field play. Also influenced by contemporaries such as Fernand Leger, with whom she studied in her adolescence, Vieira da Silva cultivated a unique style of abstraction that broke rules of formalist tradition. The artist’s skill in re-imagining structural planes to depict figurative illusions is fully evident in this colorful work on paper from which she invokes a cityscape built out of an abstraction of gestural elements. Provenance: Prior to being acquired by its current California collector, this work was held privately by a Palm Beach, Florida family. It has never previously appeared at public auction. [Art: 10 1/2 x 15 inches; Frame: 14 1/2 x 18 5/8 inches]. In good condition.

      Est: $4,000 - $6,000

MARY VIEIRA (1927-2001) BRASILIEN BAUT BRASILIA. 1957. 46 1/2x33 inches, 118x83 3/4 cm. A. Raabe, Berlin. Condition A: minor tear at right edge. Paper. Mary Vieira was a Brazilian sculptor, and the first Brazilian artist to win the São Paulo Art Biennial. In 1951, Mary Vieira moved to Europe where she met Italian poet and critic Carlo Belloli, who later became her husband. Upon settling in Switzerland, she was invited by Max Bill to participate in the last exhibition of the Swiss Group Allianz - a group that advocated Bill's theories of concrete art and the importance of color. Vieira explored dynamism in sculpture, but emphasized interdisciplinarity as a key artistic principle, also creating prints, photographs and posters. Many of her artwork installations have been placed in public spaces. In this innovative and minimalist poster for an international architecture exhibition, Viera (one of the show's organizers) uses the same green of the Brazil flag, which represents the country's fields and forests. The Interbau exhibition publicized European architectural designs for the new capital of Brazil, for which Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer eventually designed civic buildings and Lucio Costa planned the layout. Using the latitude and longitude points printed in white at the edges of the poster, we can identify the complementary red square in Viera's design as the capital city, Brasilia. Graphic Art p. 75.
