          Est: $1,200 - $1,800

Roman Vishniac (1897-1990), Russian/American UNTITLED (OLD WOMAN SEARCHING FOR WORK, WARSAW OR LUBLIN), CA. 1935-38 gelatin silver print signed to margin 14 x 11 in — 35.6 x 27.9 cm Provenance: Deja Vue Gallery, Toronto, ON Note: With a program centred on photography, the Deja Vue Gallery was one of the first spaces in Toronto to champion the medium. The diversity of the Gallery’s collection includes Canadian artists Richard Harrington and Yousuf Karsh. Harrington, known for his work in the Canadian Arctic, recorded the vanishing nomadic lifestyle of the Inuit. In his later book, “The Face of the Arctic”, he wrote that “in the midst of this misery, I took photographs. These pictures would, I hope, show the outside world what real suffering was. They would also show the strength, endurance, courage and ingenuity of an almost exhausted people.” (1) In contrast, Karsh believed that a portrait should be more than just a representation of the physical appearance of a person, and should also convey their inner spirit and character. Thanks to a variety of light techniques, each portrait included in this auction – “Georges Braque”, 1941, “Joan Baez”, 1970, “George Bernard Shaw”, 1943 – are distinctly represented, each existing within their own world. American masters are also represented by the Deja Vue collection, with offerings by Edward Weston and his Western landscapes. “Rancho Sonoma,” 1937, “Point Lobos,” 1929, “Kelp”, 1930, and “Wing of Pelican”, 1931 all represent quintessential parts of the artist’s oeuvre. Part of the Group f/64 along with Ansel Adams, Willard Van Dyke and Imogen Cunningham, Weston focused on precise studies, and his work greatly influenced the aesthetics of American photography. The final images made by the artist were taken in Point Lobos in 1948, before Parkinson's disease made his work no longer possible. His legacy is carefully maintained by his sons Brett and Cole, who have produced prints using the original negatives per the instructions of their father for approximately 40 years. Two large photographs by Roman Vishniac [1897-1990] - the well-known European Jewry photographer before the Holocaust. * A Jewish child in the Warsaw ghetto, photographed in 1938. 24x18 cm. * The Jewish street in the ghetto: 24x31 cm. The photographs are both pasted on a thick and large Wooden board for display and preservation. 50x36 cm. Good condition. Vishniac, a native of the town of Pavlovsk on the outskirts of St. Petersburg, gained international recognition for his work as a Jewish shtetl and ghetto photographer in the 1930s. As the waves of anti-Semitism began to rise to new heights in Germany, Vishniac embarked on his famous journey to Eastern Europe and photographed the face of Jewish society in all its nuances in mountain villages and urban ghettos, rabbis, scholars, and followers of various Hasiduyot. For about four years he traveled from Berlin to various remote areas of Europe and took thousands of photos. Vishniac's photographs, which reflect Jewish life as it was, considered to this day, the most comprehensive and high-quality documentation of European Jewry in the pre-Holocaust generation. In his famous book "A Vanished World", published in 1983, Vishniac brought some of his work. Provenance: The photographs came from "Moreshet" Museum - the Mordechai Anielewicz Testimony House.

ROMAN VISHNIAC, Lodz, Jewish Children Fishing, signed, 1937, 9.5x6.25" gelatin silver print, Printed c. 1970, Signed and inscribed in blue ink on print verso: Lodz / Jewish Children fishing... / Roman Vishniac / 1937. Roman Vishniac (1897-1990) was born in Russia to a wealthy Russian-Jewish family that immigrated to Berlin in 1920 in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution. As an amateur photographer, he took to the streets with his camera throughout the 1920s and 1930s, offering astute, often humorous visual commentary on his adopted city and experimenting with new and modern approaches to framing and composition. Documenting the rise of Nazi power, he focused his lens on the signs of oppression and doom that soon formed the backdrop of his Berlin street photography. From 1935 to 1938, while living in Berlin and working as a biologist and science photographer, he was commissioned by the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), then the world's largest Jewish relief organization, to photograph impoverished Jewish communities in Central and Eastern Europe. On New Year's Day, 1941, he arrived in New York and soon opened a portrait studio. At the same time, he began documenting American Jewish communal and immigrant life and established himself as a pioneer in the field of photo-microscopy. In 1947, Vishniac returned to Europe and documented Jewish displaced persons camps and the ruins of Berlin. During this time, he also recorded the efforts of Holocaust survivors to rebuild their lives, and the work of the JDC and other Jewish relief organizations in providing them with aid and emigration assistance.
