Cera, Milano 1994, n. 1 Il dipinto in esame evoca gli esiti pittorici migliori del pittore bolognese Candido Vitali, che si formì a Bologna con il Pasinelli e con il Cignani a Forlì. L'autore fu ampiamente lodato da Luigi Crespi per il singolare gusto di tinteggiare e per la leggerezza di pennello. La critica moderna nella personalità di Anna Colombi Ferretti, ricorda che l'artista beneficiì di un successo straordinario, mentre numerosissime sono le tracce documentarie negli inventari delle antiche collezioni felsinee. La studiosa sottolinea altresì i rapporti di stile con il Crespi e Arcangelo Resani, evidenziando che il suo successo fu dettato dalla varietà estetica delle creazioni, concepite con una materia vivace nel colorito, pienamente barocca nell'espressione ma al contempo leggiadra e concettualmente settecentesca per il gusto ornamentale. Realistica è poi la ricercatezza nel dipingere gli animali dal vero, così la mimesi nel descrivere i fiori e le loro modulazioni cromatiche accentuate da una luminosità vibrante e la tipica sporta di vimini.     Candido Vitali (Italian, 1680-1753) Candido Vitali (Italian, 1680-1753) A scarlet macaw in a landscape; Doves with a jay in a classical landscape A pair, oil on canvas each 241 x 159cm, in black and gilt frames (2) Provenance: Private collection, Essex. Candido Vitali (1680-1753) was a Bolognese painter of the late Baroque period. Born in Bologna, he trained under Carlo Cignani (1628-1719) and devoted himself to painting still lifes of animals, birds, flowers and fruit. The birds depicted include classic continental aviary pigeons, most likely from the Tumbler family, with early Austrian decorative farmyard fowl, and at a push Sulmtalers, and other native breeds. This pair of bird paintings were likely to have been designed to hang between windows in an Italian palazzo. We are grateful to Ivor Parrish for his assistance with the catalogue entry.

    STILLEBEN MIT FRÜCHTEN IN EINEM KORB UND ZWEI HÜHNERVÖGELN Öl auf Leinwand. 62 x 79 cm. In abgedunkelter Abendstimmung, die Gegenstände hell aufleuchtend, im rechts stehenden Korb helle Trauben neben Feigen, Apfel, Weinblättern und Sommerblumen, davor zwei Pfirsiche neben Jasminblüten. Links Hahn und Henne in lockerem Gefieder, am linken Bildrand als Repoussoir ein kräftiger Baumstamm, dahinter Blick auf eine Meeresfläche im Dunkeln mit leicht aufleuchtendem Horizont. Qualitätsvolle Malerei in flotter Pinselführung. Die meisterhafte Qualität des Bildes rechtfertigt die genannte, in der Expertise ausgeführte Zuweisung. Expertise: Dem Gemälde ist eine Expertise von Professor Giancarlo Sestieri, Rom, vom 19.04.2004 beigegeben. Mit mehreren Vergleichsbeispielen und dem Literaturverweis vor allem L. Salerno, in: La natura morta italiana, Roma, 1984, sowie A. Colombie Ferretti, in: La natura morta in Italia, Milano, 1989. Der Autor des Gutachtens führt einige Gemälde des Malers an, jeweils monogrammiert "C. V. F.", die sich etwa in der Galleria di Storia ed Arte in Udine befinden, dabei wird auch D.
