BIOGRAPHY: Joan Torras Viver was a Catalan painter, specialized in sacred art murals and stained glass. Torras comes from a line of artists. His great-grandfather, Tomas Viver i Aymerich, created one of the most important artistic decoration workshops in Sant Pere de Terrassa, and was also one of the promoters of decorative arts in the city during the 19th century. Later, his grandfather, Pere Viver, continued with the family artistic tradition and became one of the representatives of the pictorial landscape movement in Terrassa. In 1957, he completed his Fine Arts studies at the University of Barcelona, and subsequently traveled Europe for two years, to learn about the original sources of art, especially in France, Italy and Holland. He was mainly an author of sacred art, and his mural work and stained glass windows in more than a hundred religious buildings throughout Catalonia are significant. Thus, his first work in this field was a mural in the parish of Sant Agusti in Barcelona, in 1949, to later paint more murals in the parishes of Sant Just Desvern, Esplugues de Lobregat, Martorell and also in the cathedral of Sant Llorenc de Sant Feliu de Llobregat. Among many other works, he painted in 1957 the chapel and residence of nuns at the Hospital de Sant Pau (1957), the sanctuary of the Pietat in Igualada (1959), the Asil Valldejuli in Barcelona (1961), the parish de Canyelles (1962), the parish of Banyeres del Penedes (1962), the parish of Dosrius (1962), the Collegi de les Mercedaries de Martorell (1962), the former chapel of the Clinica Dexeus de Barcelona (1963) or the parishes of Navas (1963), Sant Climent de Llobregat (1963) and Santa Eulalia de Merida in Llobregat Hospital (1964). The murals of the parishes of Nazareth in Barcelona (1970) and Vilassar de Dalt (1970) are also his. That same year, he undertook another work in the cathedral of his hometown, specifically to paint the Santissimo chapel. Subsequently, in 1991 he directed the restoration of the stained glass windows in the parish of Sant Gregori Thaumaturg in Barcelona, and in 1997 he produced the stained glass windows in the dome of the parish of Sant Carles Borromeo, also in Barcelona. Already in the 21st century, he painted the chapel of the parish of Sant Vicenc de Sarria (2002) and made the stained glass windows of the parish of Vallcebre (2003).
