This woodcut by the Austrian artist Heinrich Vogtherr II (1513-1568) depicts Saint Florian extinguishing a fire. Saint Florian is a saint of the Catholic as well as of the Orthodox Church. The story goes back to Florian von Lorch, who lived in the 3rd Century and was an officer of the Roman army and commander of a unit for firefighting. The woodcut is framed under a mat and has got some traces of wear and age. The margins are slightly worn, especially at the lower right corner and slight creasing marks are visible. On the reverse are professional adhesive tapes. The dimensions of the sheet are 34.6 x 23.5 cm. Heinrich Vogtherr II. (1513-1568) Heinrich Vogtherr II. was an Austrian painter, draughtsman, wood cutter and etcher. His father, Heinrich Vogtherr the Elder was an important publisher of medical and spiritual writings during the Reformation period. The young Vogtherr came with his father to Straßburg in 1625 and assisted him in the arts and crafts. About 15 years later, he went to Augsburg as a painter and etcher, where he stood in the commission of the Fugger dynasty and created numerous fresco paintings for many buildings in Augsburg. In 1554, he moved with his father to Vienna, who was appointed ophthalmologist by the court of Ferdinand I. (tm) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
