Alexander Ernst Voigt is a painter. He uses his painting to experiment with the possibilities of the medium. His chief interest lies in the formal construction of his paintings. The starting point is always the same: the first condition he sets for his “experiment design” is a format of 40 x 30 cm. On this small area, he develops linear structures to his images which he varies time and again. This creates exciting motifs reminiscent of wave movements, leaf structures or sand formations. Each brush stroke nonetheless retains its autonomy, none meant to be simply descriptive or mimetically imitating. Voigt works with various techniques and backgrounds. He sometimes uses smoothed-off surfaces, sometimes raw canvas. Voigt creates paintings whose effect is wholly tied to the medium itself.
