In the mid 1990s he moved to Venables Valley where he built his own house and raised a family with his wife. Volaine favoured dark colours and expressive lines in his work and painted everything from landscapes, still life, and portraits. He died tragically along with his wife and their two small boys by carbon monoxide poisoning just hours after arriving home from a 2-month stay in Costa Rica. Volaine was 60 years old.
