Volck, a native of Nuremberg, Germany who immigrated to Richmond, VA, and was employed in the Confederate Naval Ordnance Department during the Civil War. The bust was sculptured in 1869 after the Civil War and when General Grant became President Grant. The state of Virginia as well as Frederick Volck were grateful for the way that General Lee was treated by General Grant at Appomattox. The bust is a symbol of that appreciation and was presented to President Grant during one of General Lee's trips to Washington to talk with the President after the war. The bronze rests on a 2 1/4 inch black round marble base and weighs approximately 39 pounds. The front of the bronze is marked "U.S. GRANT" in block letters and the back of the bronze is inscribed "U.S. PRESIDENT/FREDERICK VOLCK/1869/RICHMOND,VIRGINIA".     Frederick Volck (German-Conf. Am 1833-1891) sculpted this original bronze bust of General Lee in 1863 when he was asked by the Confederate War Dept in Richmond, VA to do so. This sculpture was to rally the troops as well as the Southern people when the Civil War was raging with no end in sight. Volck was employed in the Confederate Naval Ordinance Dept. and he took exact measurements of Lee as well as Lee's horse, Traveler. In 1863 Volck cast a limited amount of these statues, as there was a limited amount of bronze, as most bronze was cast into cannons and other armaments of war. This bronze is from the original terra cotta done by Volck. Measures 20 inches tall x 11 inches wide x 11 inches deep and weighs 50 pounds. The bronze rests on a 2 inch thick circular black marble plinth. On the front of the bust underneath in block letters is inscribed "ROBERT E. LEE" and on the backside also in block letters is inscribed "Frederick Volck, 1863, Richmond, VA." Bronze has been refinished to its original state.     The "General Ulysses S. Grant" was done by Frederick Volck (German/ Confederate-American 1833-1891). Volck executed the wonderful bronze bust of President Ulysses Grant in 1869. The bust was done in the attire of General Grant when he was commander of all the Union forces in the Civil War. General Robert E. Lee & the State of Virginia were grateful to Grant as Grant treated Lee with all due respects at the Surrender at Appomattox. It is recorded in Grant's diary that Lee visited Grant while he was President in the White House and presented Grant with this bronze bust. A similar bronze was also done by Volck of General Lee. The dimensions of the bronze are: height 18 inches, width 8 inches and length 12 inches. Weight is 50 pounds. Signed and dated on the back, Frederick Volck Richmond 1869.
