Karl Volkers (1868-1944), Jerusalem, Oil Painting, 1889

        Est: €800 - €1,000

Oil on canvas Germany, 1889 Karl Volkers (1868-1944) – German equine painter Signed and dated 'Volkers 89.' lower left and titled 'Jerusalem F. St. u. / v. Senator a. d. Stuckneull' Dimensions: 42.5 x 53 cm Frame: 53.5 x 64 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection, Bavaria Jerusalem: Canvas size portrait of the horse in landscape, a typical work made by the dedicated animal painter Karl Volkers Condition: The painting is in a good condition consistent with the age. There are scattered tiny marks. A tiny loss of color can be seen lower left, small retouched spots upper right and a restored spot lower central. On the reverse the canvas is relined at this point. The frame shows usual signs of age and wear. The dimensions are 42.5 x 53 cm and the frame measures 53.5 x 64 cm. Karl Volkers (1868-1944) The Düsseldorf-born Karl Volkers was a German equine painter of the 19th and 20th century. The profession run in his family: His farther Emil and his brother Max worked as painters as well. The artist primarily painted images of horses. He arranged the animals in profile and presented them in landscape or in front of a unique background. Occasionally Volkers added figurative staffage to give the images narrative character. The artist mainly painted individual horses hence his depictions of the animal seem to be portraits. Around 1920 he created impressions from the Berlin racecourse in Hoppegarten. Volkers, Karl 1868 Düsseldorf - 1944 Fischenich

        Est: €2,000 - €2,400

Volkers, Karl 1868 Düsseldorf - 1944 Fischenich Horse Racing at the Düsseldorf Lausward Meadows (?). Signed and dated lower right: Karl Volkers 1892. Oil on canvas. Relined. 49,5 x 94cm. In 1891 the Lausward-Meadows was held on the Rhine at the Grand Prix Dusseldorf for the first time, and started the traditional horse race. Thus it became an integral venue established in the mid 19th century. It was then held at different venues and was a very popular equestrian event. The temporal closeness of the present work of the Düsseldorf artist creates a connection to the venue of the meadows near Lausward. Volkers, Karl 1868 Düsseldorf - 1944 Fischenich Pferderennen auf den Düsseldorfer Lausward-Wiesen (?). Signiert und datiert unten rechts: Karl Volkers 1892. Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert.
