Bernard von Eichman American, 1899-1970 Night Scene Sixth Avenue Inscribed 19, verso Watercolor on paper 17 7/8 x 11 3/4 inches Bernard von Eichman was a founding member of the Bay area artists' group known as The Society of Six, which was born out of the camaraderie of the students of Frank van Sloun at the California School of Fine Arts, San Francisco. The group, which also included Selden Connor Gile, August Gay, Maurice Logan, Louis Siegriest and William Clapp, pioneered in introducing modernist ideas to the West Coast and exhibited their works together in and around the Oakland area from 1918 until 1930, to great acclaim. In 1928, von Eichman relocated to New York City where he created the five watercolors presented here. He lived and worked in New York until the beginning of World war II, when he returned to California, where he remained until his death in 1970. Von Eichman's fascination with the activity of New York City is quite evident in these paintings, which are representative of the scenes of Harlem and the Lower East Side on which he focused. Bernard von Eichman's work is included in the permanent collection of the Oakland Museum. A 1997 publication by Nancy Boas, Society of Six: California Colorists (University of California Press) explores von Eichman's career in depth. C
