CARL VON HASSLER "NEW MEXICO AUTUMN" OIL ON BOARD

        Est: -

Carl Von Hassler (1887 - 1969) "New Mexico Autumn" Oil on Board. Inscribed and titled on reverse (Region Sangre de Christos N.M.) / (Village Rociada) / "New Mexico Autumn" / By Von Hassler - 43." Growing up in Bremen, Germany, Carl Von Hassler always knew he wanted to be an artist. Von Hassler experienced a life-altering event when he attended a performance of a 1903 Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show in Bremen. That's when he first decided to go to America. Von Hassler first settled in New York in 1912 where he studied with members of the Ashcan Group. As the United States prepared to enter World War I, Von Hassler Joined the US Army in the fight against his homeland. After four years of service he was released from the US Army and, in 1922, Von Hassler moved to New Mexico. Instead of following his New York acquaintances to Santa Fe, however, he settled in the up-and-coming town of Albuquerque, he would go on to be known as the "Dean of the Albuquerque Art Colony." In his early years in the state, Von Hassler made careful study of Navajo culture, spending many days at the trading post in Manuelito, talking with residents of the area and sketching. He would eventually become proficient in the Navajo language. The Indian Pueblos of New Mexico were another favorite subject for Von Hassler, and he systematically sketched and painted each of the villages. By the 1930s he was widely known for his ability to capture the moods of the land as it changed through the seasons. He did this with a carefully controlled palette consisting of a limited range of finely modulated color. But this technique was actually based in his knowledge of the natural world. His friends and students recalled that Von Hassler was an expert on nature lore and could name almost any plant that grew in the state. Generally, the artist did his sketch on location, returning to the studio to execute the painting. He taught privately, and among his better known former pupils are Sam Smith, Ben Turner, Walter Bambrook, Novella King, and Betty Sabo. Carl Von Hassler | Northern New Mexico Village Winter Scene

        Est: $10,000 - $15,000

Artist: Carl Von Hassler | 1887-1969 Title: Northern New Mexico Village Winter Scene Signed l/l: Von Hassler Media: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 26 by 32 inches Condition: Very Good Condition details: This painting is in very good condition. Close inspection with the unaided eye reveals a very small area in the upper left with hairline cracks in the pigments. Close inspection under UV light reveals a normal fluorescence of artist pigments and no signs of restoration. Work is framed in a carved antique gold panel with a narrow linen liner. The frame is in very good condition with little wear. Verso: appraisal information is provided on the back: 21. ONE OIL ON CANVAS, untitled (Northern New Mexico village winter scene), Carl Von Hassler, measuring 25 ½” high x 31 ½” wide. This more closely resembles the usual von Hassler in that an adobe village is placed amidst cottonwood trees in a valley beneath snow capped mountains. In this painting in particular, the village is placed near bottom center with cottonwoods at right and at left. This appears to be early winter as the cottonwood trees still possess rust colored leaves. This item is signed lower left “Von Hassler”. It is placed with a liner and framed in a wooden molding measuring overall 33 1/2 “ high x 39 ½” wide. Appraised Value 1996 , $8,200. For Steve & Brigitte.

Framed Von Hassler Painting - Son of Gov. Mirabal

        Est: $2,500 - $3,500

Carl von Hassler (German, 1887-1969), oil on canvas portrait of son of Taos Governor Mirabal, 1931. Signed and dated on lower left. Brass plaque engraved, "Son of Taos Governor Mirabal by Carl von Hassler." This realistic portrait demonstrates how von Hassler paid tribute to his Native American sitters, simultaneously reveling in the act of painting. At the age of 16, Carl von Hassler attended Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show in Bremen, Germany. The young von Hassler was so impressed, that he decided to move to America. This would happen in 1912 following military service as well as six years of study at the Dusseldorf Art Academy. Upon moving to New York City, von Hassler studied with members of the famous Ashcan School. Following service in the US Army against his native Germany, von Hassler relocated to New Mexico where he pursued his artistic career once again. Size: 10.125" W x 12.125" H (25.7 cm x 30.8 cm); 17.5" W x 19.625" H (44.4 cm x 49.8 cm) including frame Interestingly, by 1917, von Hassler's fellow Ashcan painters were lured to New Mexico to depict the Southwest lands and its people, but Von Hassler joined the US Army to do battle against his native Germany. Sadly, his brother enlisted to fight for Germany, and when his brother was killed, von Hassler's mother disowned Carl. Following his release from the Army, von Hassler moved to New Mexico. Rather than Santa Fe, which was the destination of this artist friends, he settled in Albuquerque, but he traveled throughout New Mexico - excited to capture the indigenous flora and fauna - as well as its pueblos and peoples. Von Hassler appreciated various media: oil, egg tempera, as well as watercolor. At the Dusseldorf Academy he studied the chemistry of paint, and throughout his career he explored new materials in order to arrive at the proper colors and textures. Carl Von Hassler has a very impressive auction record. Recently, his "Summer Mesa Scene" (1927) - an oil on canvas of similar dimensions - sold at Santa Fe Art Auction on November 10, 2018 hammering at $2,250. The somewhat smaller "Adobe at Night" sold for $2500 at Clars Auction Gallery on February 18, 2017.
