Titled and inscribed at lower centre on the backing board "Bleistiftzeichnung von Carl von Piloty . / Published by Eduard Hallberger in Stuttgart & Leipzig / Unalterable collotype by Römmler & Jonas Dresden". Inscribed "Lenbach" in lead on the verso of the mount. The German painter Carl Theodor von PILOTY (1826 Munich -1886 Ambach at Lake Starnberg) is regarded as a pioneer of Wilhelminian painting in Germany and as one of the most important representatives of realistic history painting, who intended to reproduce the historical scene, garments etc. as detailed as possible. From 1840 Piloty studied under the painter Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld at the Academy of Arts in Munich; study trips to Italy, Brussels, Antwerp and Paris. Date: 19th century Description: Very fine print by the German artist Carl T. von Piloty. After initial training with his father, Piloty went to the Munich Academy in 1840 to study under Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld. Study trips took him to Brussels, Antwerp and Paris, where he became acquainted with the colourism and realism of Belgian-French history painting and received decisive impulses from the works of Louis Gallait and Paul Delaroche. Appointed director of the Munich Academy. Piloty, who became famous for his large-format history paintings with their pathetic staging, can be regarded as a pioneer of the Gründerzeit style of painting in Germany, inscribed below the image in the printing plate "Originalradirung von Dr Carl v. Verso stamp of the Munich paint material company “A. Schutzmann München (ab 1844)”. Without frame. Painted virtuosically on canvas. Chronologically the painting should be close to the painting “Seni by the Corpse of Wallenstein” from 1855. In 1865 Piloty created the subject-related painting “The Death of Caesar”, here too the two colours white and red strongly dominate against a dark background (Lower Saxony State Museum).
