Harold von Schmidt (1893 - 1982) "Kiowa Scouts" (From The Lost Wagon Train, By Zane Grey), 1932 Original Oil on Canvas includes original 1932 Cosmopolitan Magazine. This original oil on canvas work was published as an illustration for famed western novelist's Zane Grey article "The Lost Wagon Train" in Cosmopolitan Magazine, No. 553 July, 1932. Featured on pages 32, and 33. Features the caption below the image "Lean, wild riders went north and south to fetch news of any caravans that might be approaching." This work is signed on the lower right by the artist, and dated 1932. Along with personalized inscription below (Indiscernible). Also inscribed on the reverse, "Part I / Page 30 / The Kiowa Scouts Rode in Before Sunset, The Caravan Was on The Dry Trail / Please Return To / Harold Von Schmidt." Zane Grey's "The Lost Wagon Train" is the story of a man named Stephen Latch. A soldier from the Civil War, who turns to a life of thievery and murder. He strives to uphold the values of the Confederacy, and sets his sights on the wealth of resources migrating westward from the northern United States. He rounds up a band of ruthless misfits to help him stake his claim of the riches of the caravans. His plan calls for an unlikely alliance with the Kiowa Indians. Chief Satana along with his band of Kiowas, are in desperate need of "firewater". Latch plans to use it to inspire them to new barbaric levels not seen anywhere else. The Lost Wagon Train follows Latch on his greatest attack against a train of 160 wagons, and shows how the once troubled man turns a corner and finds a new life away from his old. Harold von Schmidt was an illustrator and painter, known for creating gripping stories with his art. His work was featured in many noted publications, including the Saturday Evening Post, Collier's Weekly, Cosmopolitan, Liberty, and Sunset magazines. He was inspired by the work of Frederic Remington and Charles Russell, von Schmidt studied with F. H. Meyers at the California School of Arts and Crafts in Berkeley. Maynard Dixon had a studio close to the school, so von Schmidt went to meet him and eventually modeled for Dixon in exchange for receiving advise and guidance on his own art. In 1924, von Schmidt moved to New York City, where he studied with Harvey Dunn at the Grand Central Art School. Shortly after he became a prominent illustrator of western subjects. Von Schmidt created his images in oils, working mostly with large canvases as they allowed him more freedom and ability than smaller formats. He would utilize bold, energetic strokes rather than tight detail. Original WWll Poster - Have You Really Tried To Save Gas by Harold Von Schmidt

          Est: $200 - $500

This poster from 1944 was designed by Harold Von Schmidt (1893-1982) to promote a governmental campaign for saving gas. During WWII, the United States heavily promoted conservation of war materials such as metal, rubber, gas and food among others. The image shows a close up portrait of a wounded soldier, a very dramatic image to raise awareness on the importance of ration. Car clubs were created to encourage carpooling, and thus save gas. Von Schmidt studied at the California College of Arts and Crafts and the San Francisco Art Institute, and by age 20 he had published his first cover illustration in Sunset magazine. He moved to New York in 1924 and established his studio in his house. Von Schmidt designed illustrations for many magazines throughout his career and also private commissions such as murals for the California Governor's Office and oil paintings for the US Military Academy at West Point. In 1944, Von Schmidt was recruited by the Air Force to become a war correspondent in Europe and Japan. He focused on depicting the small details of a soldier's everyday life. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.
