BIOGRAPHY: Frank von der Lancken was committed to making art available to all Americans, and he promoted this belief as a teacher in progressive art schools. His mother had come to the United States with her family from Lyon, France, and his father was a German silk merchant. They sent Frank to the Pratt Institute in New York, an alternative art school with an experimental program that mixed studio courses and industrial arts. Von der Lancken eventually moved to Rochester, New York, where he modeled his teaching on Pratt's "practical" art education. Despite his busy schedule, he carved out time for illustration, sculpture, mural painting, and stained glass, all projects that allowed him to demonstrate his skills and commitment to democratic art. In 1908 he returned to Europe and met his future wife, Giulia, in Florence. Von der Lancken eventually settled in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he, his wife, and children were nicknamed "the first family of Art in Tulsa" (Von der Lancken, 1925, quoted in Parker, Frank Von Der Lancken: Artist and Educator, 2000).

Born in Brooklyn, Frank von der Lancken (1872-1950) was an influential, but largely forgotten, proponent of the Arts and Crafts movement in America. He was never represented by a gallery and apparently had no agent. In fact, much of von der Lanckens oeuvre remained in his possession until his death in 1950 and was subsequently preserved by his children and grandchildren. During his career, von der Lancken migrated from the larger art centers of New York and Paris to the more remote areas of New Milford, Connecticut, Rochester, New York, and Chautauqua, New York. Then he found his way to Louisville, Kentucky and finally Tulsa, Oklahoma, and he was always true to the Arts and Crafts movement. He and his wife were called the first family of art in Tulsa. Man in Turban, an oil-on-canvas from the estate of Frank von der Lancken. Man in Turban is a striking example of a portrait by von de Lancken. The artist captures the essence of the man he painted: the orange turban draws the viewer into the painting, the beard gives him presence, and you can see age inside the face. The man is looking at you as if hes about to speak, too, the words just ready to flow. The painting is unframed and unsigned, restored condition. Farm at Twilight, unsigned and unframed, from the estate of Frank von der Lancken. This watercolor is a small treat, with a farm dominating the center of the painting and rolling hills providing the background. Its not known when the painting was done, but based on other works by the artist, it was probably done in the early 1900s. Again, the landscape and familiar rural theme that pervades his works from this time period. The blue tacks that appear at the top of the painting are not really tacks. They were actually tacks that were painted over by the artist and the blue paint slipped under the tacks, leaving the impression you see here. The watercolor is supported on the back with thin paperboard. With provenance from the Hirschl & Adler Galleries in New York City. Portrait of a Young Girl, 1928, a framed charcoal from the estate of Frank von der Lancken. Frank von der Lanckens career was largely defined by his interest in art education and his role as a teacher of the arts. In Portrait of a Young Girl, he uses line and shading to highlight beauty in art. He used charcoal as a medium for the portrait because charcoal creates a variety of depth and shading, and you can see form and contour in the hair and shadows on the girls face. This shading gives her lifelike features and a very clean image. The body is lightly drawn and appears to be fragile, probably to emphasize the delicate features of her face, and its likely that von der Lancken used the girl as technical practice for a youthful portrait. When he was teaching art classes in Chautauqua, New York, he used charcoal drawings to focus on balance, rhythm, and form. He said that when art strayed from these fundamentals, the result was preposterous and often ugly. He believed that artists should stick to the fundamentals, and when they used their technical skills to do that, they would portray beauty in art. Portrait of A Young Girl is part of a collection that comes directly from the estate of Frank von der Lancken and includes oils on canvas, oils on board, watercolors, charcoals, and colored pencils. The collection was displayed at Hirschl & Adler Galleries in New York City in 2017 and 2018. His biography comes from Articulating an American Aesthetic: Frank von der Lancken, 2013, The Trout Gallery, Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pennsylvania, with the help of staff at Hirschl & Adler: Born in Brooklyn, Frank von der Lancken (1872-1950) was an influential, but largely forgotten, proponent of the Arts and Crafts movement in America. Between 1897 and 1897 he trained in Paris at the Academies Julian and Colarossi, and in the late 1890s his works were included in various exhibitions around the U.S. In 1903 he was invited to return to the Pratt Institute as an instructor, and in 1904 he was hired by the Mechanics Institute, a rival school in Rochester, where he taught Pratts brand of progressive art education. In 1921, von der Lancken entered the next phase of his career when he became director of the School of Arts and Crafts at the Chautauqua Institution in New York. He spent summers in New Milford until 1946, was a permanent resident of Rochester from 1904 to 1923, he spent two years at Louisville (1924 - 1926), and finally settled down in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he lived with his wife Giulia from 1926 to 1950. "Nero", a framed oil-on-canvas from the estate of Frank von der Lancken. An unusual painting by Franck von der Loncken. It depicts a modern-day Nero who abuses people while his city burns. Nero wears a toga that displays a tubby, grotesque figure, a purple loin cloth that denotes his status as emperor, and he has a devils horn protruding from the left side of his head. Nero's left foot is holding down a servant's head, forcing the servant to bow before him, while a female figure on Nero's right is offering a fruit or gourd to the emperor and Nero is choking a girl with his left hand. A modern-day priest is standing off to the side with his hands in supplication, but you never see the priest's face. A building is burning in the background, too, and the painting creates a sense of revulsion that is far from the serene paintings of von der Lancken's other works. The painting is unsigned. "Nymph and Zeus", an oil-on-canvas from the estate of Frank von der Lancken. This painting shows a figure in the foreground who looks like a ballet dancer, and the forms on the right create the sense that you're back in ancient Greece. "Portrait of a Man with a Goatee, Reading", pencil and chalk on paper from the estate of Frank von der Lancken. This pencil and chalk portrait shows a man reading a book, in quiet contemplation. It's signed "F. von der Lancken" at the bottom right, but there is no date. There are small pieces of yellowed tape on the edges of the paper to keep it attached to the backer board. With provenance from the Hirschl & Adler Galleries in New York City. Born in Brooklyn, Frank von der Lancken (1872-1950) was an influential, but largely forgotten, proponent of the Arts and Crafts movement in America. He was never represented by a gallery and apparently had no agent. In fact, much of von der Lancken's oeuvre remained in his possession until his death in 1950 and was subsequently preserved by his children and grandchildren. He and his wife were called the "first family of art in Tulsa". "Boy Reading", a signed watercolor from the estate of Frank von der Lanken. A beautiful watercolor of a boy seated with a book, framed with a brown matt that suits the watercolor really well. The brushstrokes are clean and fine and just make the painting what is - absolutely beautiful. Signed "F. von der Lancken", with an estate stamp on the verso. The stamp is round and red with a large V in the center, and it reads "From the Estate of Frank von der Lancken" inside the circle.
