Jan Sadeler, Maaarten de Vos - Music Motet

        Est: €420 - €640

A very rare depiction of an 'beeldmotet' (Image Motet) showing the performance of a music play composed specially for the engraved work. Not only are the instruments depicted with great care, the playing technique is also accurate; the finger placements on the zinc and flute and the posture of the bass violinists are correctly reproduced. Moreover, with their tessitura, these instruments can perfectly perform the depicted music. This is a five-part motet, in which only four voices are notated and the tenor must perform the bass part in 'canon in diapason'. The standing angel on the left is seen singing along, presumably the superius. Hymn of Saint Mary by Music-Making Angels, Johann Sadeler (I) (engraver), after Maarten de Vos, Cornelis Verdonck (composer), 1585. In the Hymn of Saint Mary by Music-Making Angels, we see the angels kneeling around Mary watching the parties as they play the music. The Virgin kneeling in prayer with four angels at her feet playing musical instruments (left viol and cornett, right flute and viol) and two more holding music up on boards, in an interior illuminated by two candles.
