Staple bound, 25 × 16.5 cm, 14 pp. de vries re-purposed an article he published in the French scientific magazine Mammalia (a biological analysis of the distribution of small mammals in The Netherlands). He turned the original wrapper inside out and typed a new title and new publishing information on it. By retitling/resigning the ‘readymade' he seems to suggest that the scientific description of reality is only part of the truth (a castrated reality). Light toning and handling wear to covers. Extremely rare early artists’ publication. Ref: hdv 1960.081.1.

Signed, dated, titled and inscribed 'herman de Vries V 67-99 "random-structure"' on chipboard verso. The present work is recorded on the artist's homepage. The Dutch artist Herman de Vries has made a name for himself through his continuous exploration of nature themes and the resulting dichotomy between chaos and order. The research into the principles of chance arising from nature has been a lifelong drive for him. The work offered here, dating from 1967, is a monochromatic relief in white on white: Smaller squares overlap, cast shadows, protrude into the three-dimensional space and evoke a push and pull effect on the viewer. Herman de Vries was part of the Dutch Informel and was loosely associated with the "nul" group that preceded the German ZERO movement. In 2015, he represented the Netherlands at the Vendig Biennial. He lives and works in Franconia.

Mitte der 1950er Jahre malte er informelle Bilder, 1956 entstanden die ersten weißen Collagen, 1959 das erste weiße Bild. Wie Jan Schoonhoven, der 1959 mit Armando, Henk Peeters, Kees van Bohemen und Jan Henderikse die Gruppe niederländischer Informeller bildete, die seit 1960 zur Gruppe nul wurde, stand er ZERO nahe. Arbeiten von De Vries wurden 1962 auf der von Peeters kuratierten Ausstellung nul im Amsterdamer Stedelijk Museum gezeigt. Im selben Jahr entstanden erste aleatorische Arbeiten. De Vries trat seit 1961 mit einer Vielzahl von Aktivitäten im öffentlichen Raum auf u. a. in Arnheim, Düsseldorf, Biel, Hagen, Marl, Bamberg, Amsterdam, Rosenheim, Nürnberg, München, New York, Enschede, Kaiserslautern, Hamburg, Berlin, Bremen, Stuttgart (Sanctuarium, 1993), Erfurt sowie bei den Skulptur.Projekten in Münster. Herman de Vries, Black dots, 2 serigraphs, once signed and framed Herman de Vries, *1931 Alkmaar, Black dots, serigraph, approx. 49 x 69 cm, signed on verso, dated 1975, numbered 7/150, framed under glass as well as Black dots, serigraph, 60 x 42 cm, with small pinholes at the corners. In 1953 de Vries began to work artistically and he had his first solo exhibition in 1954. In the mid-1950s he painted informal pictures, in 1956 he made his first white collages, and in 1959 his first white picture. Like Jan Schoonhoven, who in 1959 with Armando, Henk Peeters, Kees van Bohemen and Jan Henderikse formed the group of Dutch informalists that became the group nul in 1960, he was close to ZERO. Works by De Vries were shown in 1962 at the nul exhibition curated by Peeters at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. In the same year, he produced his first aleatoric works. Since 1961, De Vries has performed in public spaces in many places, including Arnhem, Düsseldorf, Biel, Hagen, Marl, Bamberg, Amsterdam, Rosenheim, Nuremberg, Munich, New York, Enschede, Kaiserslautern, Hamburg, Berlin, Bremen, Stuttgart (Sanctuarium, 1993), Erfurt and at the Skulptur.Projekte in Münster.
