    • Theodoros Vryzakis, Follower, Moor with Horse, late 19th C.
      Oct. 06, 2014

Theodoros Vryzakis, Follower, Moor with Horse, late 19th C.

      Est: €1,920 - €2,400

Oil on panel Presumably Germany, late 19th century Follower of Theodoros Philippos Vryzakis (1814-1878) - Greek painter and representative of the Munich School Inscribed lower right 'TP. BRYSAKIS' Decorative gilt frame Dimensions: 20 x 24.5 cm Good condition Interpretation of the in the 19th century frequently recurring motif of an oriental groom with a noble stallion The present painting is a beautiful work by a follower of the Greek artist Theodoros Philippos Vryzakis, who was a prominent member of the Munich School. Active in Munich, he was specialized in the depiction of scenes of the Greek War of Independence against the Ottoman supremacy. However, the artistic repertoire of representatives of the Munich School also included romanticized and exotic subjects such as the moor, who served as a symbol of the fascination with the Orient. The present painting depicts the oriental figure as an adventurous warrior dressed in a colorful costume. The work impressively exemplifies the popularity of Orientalism in the late 19th century and early 20th century. The painting is in good condition considering its age. It is inscribed lower right 'TP. BRYSAKIS'. The paint surface is slightly rubbed and shows small areas of retouching to the edges. The stucco gilt frame has later been painted in gold; there is a small chipped off area upper right. The frame is verso fitted with an old, illegible label. The framed work measures 43.5 x 48.5 cm and the size of the panel is 20 x 24.5 cm. (cbo) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
