    • Arnould de Vuez (1644-1720) - Alexander the Great cutting the Gordian Knot (c.1700)
      Oct. 09, 2024

Arnould de Vuez (1644-1720) - Alexander the Great cutting the Gordian Knot (c.1700)

      Est: €20,000 - €25,000

Oil on canvas, 97 x 122 cm (framed). The Gordian knot was a legendary knot that tied the rudder of King Gordias' chariot. According to prophecy, whoever managed to untie it would become lord of Asia, something that Alexander the Great accomplished by cutting it with a blow of his sword. I would like to thank François Marandet for attributing this work to Arnould de Vuez (1644-1720). Our painting bears all the stylistic characteristics of the painter, whose work was the subject of a retrospective at the Musée de l'Hôtel Sandelin in Saint-Omer (see F. Marandet, Arnould de Vuez, un peintre en Flandre française, Saint-Omer exhibition catalogue, 2020). Born in Saint-Omer, Vuez trained there before moving to Paris, where he was a pupil of Claude François, known as Frère Luc. During the 1670s he resided in Italy, especially in Rome, where he copied numerous works by Raphael. Returning to Paris, he was admitted in 1681 as a history painter to the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture (with his work Allegory of the Union of France and Bavaria, Louvre). Provenance: French private collection.
