          Est: €5,000 - €6,000

ARTHUR WAAGEN, (Memel, Lithuania, 1833 - France, 1898). "L'angelus". Metal sculpture. Signed and titled. Size: 73 x 25 x 23 cm. Round sculpture made in patinated metal, representing an athletic boy with his shirt rolled up with a bundle between his hands and a hat, with a resting attitude, after doing field work, captured in a static position which is both naturalistic and elegant, in the classical manner. Particularly noteworthy is the careful and detailed modelling, typical of French sculpture of realist heritage. Born in Memel, then East Prussia, the sculptor Arthur Waagen specialised in orientalist, genre and animal themes. He developed his career in France and exhibited his works to the public from 1869 onwards. He is now represented in museums such as Sheffield Museum in England, as well as in numerous private collections.

          Est: €2,000 - €2,500

ARTHUR WAAGEN (Memel, Lithuania, 1833 - France, 1898). Clock "Valkyrie" "The time is money", ca. 1900. Sculpture in calamine with incorporated clock. Signed. Measurements: 70 x 39 x 23 cm. Round bust made of patinated bronze, representing an exotic and beautiful oriental princess, with a smiling face and rich attire composed mainly of coins, reflecting the sumptuousness of the East imagined by Europeans. It also has a fantastic mask on the chest, of classical mannerist inspiration, under which we can see the clock face, with a bronze front and Roman numerals in cobalt blue on white porcelain cartouches, with hands in the shape of a pike and fleur-de-lis. Born in the town of Memel, then belonging to East Prussia, the sculptor Arthur Waagen specialized in orientalist, genre and animal themes. He developed his career in France, and exhibited his works to the public from 1869. He is currently represented in museums such as the Sheffield Museum in England, as well as in numerous private collections. Orientalism should be understood as one of the currents that fed the European art of the nineteenth century, coinciding with the triumph of the capitalist bourgeoisie and imperialist countries, especially England and France. Within the romantic rejection of time itself, a fantastic and free flight in time and space is developed, towards antiquity and towards an Orient that extends from Spain to Russia, passing through North Africa and even reaching Japan. If Chinese art dominated the 18th century and Japanese art dazzled the Impressionists, the Near East will be the new discovery. Starting with the beautiful and unattainable odalisques of Ingres, with such pale skin and elegant gestures that always lead us to think of a captive Christian princess, never an Arab woman, the various pictorial schools will develop a whole new iconography that seeks to recreate in a fantastic way -since nothing is known about the Orient- a world forbidden to Westerners and full of attractions. Painters such as the French painters Bouguereau and Giraud recreated exotic scenes in great detail, seeking to serve as a window to the unknown through an almost photographic reproduction that endowed the narratives with verisimilitude and spurred the imagination of the European spectator.

ARTHUR WAAGEN (GERMAN, 1833-1898), BRONZE GROUP 'KABYLE AU RETOUR DE LA CHASSE (THE BERBER HUNTER)'LATE 19TH CENTURYWith polychrome cold painted detailing to the dark brown patina, cast signature and with title plaque to base of sculpture, on a custom made wood standthe bronze 90cm high, the base 76cm wide, the stand 37cm high, 86cm wideThis composition, with the Berber hunter returning from the hunt, his dogs below, is perhaps the defining work of Max Arthur Waagen's oeuvre. He exhibited at the Paris Salon between 1861 and 1887. 'Kabyle au retour de la chasse' was conceived in 1870 and also exhibited under the titles 'Chasseur arabe' and 'Cavalier aux chiens'. A cast of the model is in the Dahesh Museum, New York, whilst a cast with a variant fluted base is published by Payne (op. cit.). Unusually this example still retains the cold painted polychrome detailing to the hunter's cloak and hat.C. Payne, Animals in Bronze, Reference and Price Guide, Woodbridge, 1986, pp. 284-285; P. ARTHUR WAAGEN (GERMAN, 1833-1898): A LARGE METAMORPHIC, PATINATED, COLD PAINTED AND PARCEL GILT SPELTER ORIENTALIST FIGURE OF AN EXOTIC DANCER the Odalisque standing on tip toes and holding a tambourine in her right hand, wearing a tasselled and striped shawl and a headdress, both detaching to reveal her nude below except for a necklace, raised on a base naturalistically cast as a lion pelt, signed to the base 'Waagen', 71cm high Arthur Waagen was born in Germany but settled in Paris, opening his own studio at Cours-de-Vincennes. Records show that he exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon between 1861 and 1887 and is probably most famous for his dramatic Orientalist group 'Kabyle au Retour de la Chasse'. He worked mostly in spelter rather than bronze but his sculptures are of equal if not better quality than many of the bronzes produced by his contemporaries.
