      Karl Wilhelm Wach (1787 Berlin - 1845 ibid.): Seated male nude with crossed legs, c. 1810, Charcoal Technique: Charcoal and Red chalk drawing on Paper Stamp: Collector's stamp, Lugt no.: 3951. Date: c. 1810 Description: Impressive body study of a seated man with crossed legs. The draughtsman took particular care in the elaboration of the young body's defined musculature; he pointedly outlines the athletic physique with skilfully placed hatching. The artist also drew the Marburg Rider (equestrian image of the Thuringian landgrave) in the field below the seat. Wilhelm Wach initially studied in Berlin under the history and portrait painter Karl Kretschmar and from 1804 at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. From 1810, he received commissions from Friedrich Wilhelm III and spent time in Paris between 1815 and 1817, where he was a pupil in the studio of Jacques-Louis David and continued his studies with Antoine-Jean Gros after David's departure into exile. Wach enrolled at the École des beaux-arts in 1817. Through the intercession of Alexander von Humboldt, Wach received a royal scholarship for a trip to Italy between 1817 and 1819. After his return to Berlin in 1819, he opened his own studio, was appointed a full member of the Royal Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin in 1820 and became a member of the Senate of the Royal Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin in 1829. Alongside Karl Friedrich Schinkel, Alois Hirt, Gustav Friedrich Waagen, Christian Daniel Rauch and Wilhelm von Humboldt, Wach was a member of the commission for the establishment of the Royal Museum from 1828, and in 1840/41 he was appointed vice-director of the Royal Prussian Academy of Arts. Mark: "Sammlung Scharfen". unknown. 20th century Date: 19th century Description: Beautifully preserved red chalk drawing of a group of mourners with Mary on a throne, mourning her dead son in her lap after taking him down from the cross. The author of our Pieta, Karl Wilhelm Wach, was one of the most important artists of the Berlin school of painting. After taking part in the wars of liberation in 1813 and 1815 and continuing his artistic training in Paris (with Jaques Louis David and Antoine-Jean Gros, among others) and Rome, he returned to Berlin in 1819 and was able to open his own studio there, in the neighbourhood of Tieck and Rauch, thanks to the support of the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III, who appreciated Wach's work early on and also had his family members portrayed by him. He was appointed professor at the Berlin Academy in 1824 and became royal court painter in 1827. From 1840 until his death, he held the office of vice-director of the Royal Prussian Academy of Arts.       Sitzender Putto. Rötel auf Van der Ley-Bütten. Beschriftet "Prof. Wach", nicht dat. (um 1830). 37,7 x 24,1 cm. (155) - - Feine Zeichnung eines seitlich sitzenden Putto mit erhobenem Arm, den Blick Richtung Betrachter gerichtet. Das elegante Blatt ist der Liebe des Klassizismus zur Linie verpflichtet und läßt klar den Einfluß der Ausbildung Wachs bei den großen französischen Klassizisten Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825) und Antoine-Jean Gros (1771-1835) erkennen. Wilhelm Wach, der ab 1827 Hofmaler in Berlin war, unterhielt in seinem durch König Friedrich Wilhelm II. zur Verfügung gestellten Atelier eine sehr erfolgreiche Schule, durch die er bald mit dem Titel Professor geehrt wurde. - Bei der Namensnennung am Unterrand der Zeichnung handelt es sich wahrscheinlich eher um eine spätere Beschriftung als um eine Signatur.

The work is marked on the verso with three collection stamps (unbek. Collection, initial "L" with owl, Lugt no. 3551, Collection Erhard Oskar Kaps, Lugt no. 3549 and Collection Scharfen, Lugt no. 3951). The author of our Pieta, Karl Wilhelm Wach, was one of the most important artists of the Berlin School of Painting. After taking part in the wars of liberation in 1813 and 1815 and furthering his artistic training in Paris (with Jaques Louis David and Antoine-Jean Gros, among others) and Rome, he returned to Berlin in 1819 and was able to open his own studio there, in the neighbourhood of Tieck and Rauch, thanks to the support of the Prussian King Frederick William III, who appreciated Wach's work early on and also had his family members portrayed by him. In 1824 he was appointed professor at the Berlin academy and became royal court painter in 1827. From 1840 until his death, he finally held the post of vice-director of the Royal Prussian Academy of Arts.
