The Golfers: A Grand Match Played Over St Andrews Links, Hand-Colored Engraving Circa 1850

      Est: $7,000 - $10,000

This is a first edition hand-colored steel engraving by Charles E. Wagstaffe from 1850. The engraving was based after an original oil painting from 1847 by Charles Lees depicting the same scene. Printed by W. Wolding of Edinburgh, this is a rare "proof" depiction of one of the most famous games played in golf history. The Grand Match was played upon the Links of St Andrews in 1841, during the annual meeting of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club. Charles Lees’s 1847 painting is one of the most celebrated pieces of art pertaining to the game of golf. In the painting, Lee renders the landscape of golf’s most famous links subservient to the actual game. He depicts over 40 figures gathered together to watch a two-ball foursome match, pitting Sir David Baird and Sir Ralph Anstruther against Major Hugh Lyon Mayfair and John Campbell. Engraver Charles Wagstaff was employed to produce a high quality set of limited edition prints of the work in 1850. Wagstaff worked with the Edinburgh publisher Alexander Hill and produced the “proof” set of prints shortly after Lees’s original oil painting gained its critical acclaim.
