    • JAMES WALES (1747-95)
      Sep. 22, 2005

      JAMES WALES (1747-95)

      Est: £2,000 - £3,000

[Entrance to Dumarlena, Ellora] pencil and grey wash drawing, inscribed 'Doomar Leyna A.K. 395' lower centre, with inscription, 'Rock Temple of Ellora', lower right (short marginal tear). 475 x 655mm. The present drawing has been identified by Archer as the work of James Wales. It differs from the finished aquatint in the Sixth Series of the Daniells' Oriental Scenery, 'Doomar Lena', (Abbey 420, no. 110), causing Archer to speculate that it is 'either a drawing rejected for inclusion in that series or one discarded from the supplementary series, projected for publication as Views and Antiquities of the Temples of Salsette THOMAS DANIELL (1749-1840) after JAMES WALES The Upper Part of Kailâsa. No. 1; The Upper Part of Kailâsa. No. II. 2 handcoloured aquatints, paired to form a panorama, each 540 x 660mm, by Thomas Daniell after James Wales, from Hindoo Excavations in the Mountain of Ellora, London: 1804, from Oriental Scenery, on thick paper, No. 1 watermarked 'J. Whatm[an] 1804'. Abbey Travel II, 420 nos. 116 & 117, together with: [The upper Part of Kailâsa, No. II] unfinished engraver's proof in outline for the right hand plate of the panorama, with pencil additions, 455 x 635mm; together with 2 unfinished engraver's proofs in outline, one with additions in pencil, for aquatints from Hindoo Excavations in the Mountain of Ellora (possibly for Râmêswara, plate 11). The Kailasanatha Temple is dedicated to Shiva and is probably the most impressive ensemble of the whole Ellora group. It is approached on the west side through a rock screen pierced by an entrance passage. A Nandi shrine precedes the central great assembly hall leading subsequently to the main Lingam shrine. E.M. Forster found the site 'more amazing than anything in a land where much amazes.' (6)
