He received his Masters of Arts in Art History from the University of British Columbia and remains based in Vancouver. Wallace is considered the pioneer of a photo-conceptualism that fundamentally influenced and reconfigured contemporary art practice in Vancouver. He had a profound influence on such distinguished artists as Jeff Wall, Rodney Graham and Stan Douglas. His art, which frequently combines painting and photography, encourages the viewer's involvement and problematizes the perceived differences between the two media. This approach allows Wallace to create hybrid objects that illuminate the symbolic potential of everyday subject matter and invest commonplace scenes with deep meaning. He is represented by numerous important galleries in Canada and internationally and is included in the collections of leading museums including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles and the Musée de l'Art Moderne de Saint-Etienne in France.
