        British, 19th century. A collection of two 19th century hand colored botanical lithographs, comprising "Chamaerops Martiana" by engraver M. Gauci (English, 19th century) after Nathaniel Wallich (Danish/British, 1786-1854) from "Plantae Asiaticae Rariores" (or "Descriptions and Figures of a Select Number of Unpublished East Indian Plants"), printed by Englemann, Graf, Coindet & Co., botanical print depicting palm plant; and "Corypha Taliera". Each framed approximately 26.75" x 21". Each sight approximately 19.5" x 13.5".

Gauci and Weddell after Gorchand, Vishnu Prasad, M. Curtis, Miss Drake, and others, plates 222/223 constituting one folding plate, printed by Engelmann, Graf, Coindet & Co., Engelmann & Co., and Graf & Soret, one folding double-page engraved map, seven pieces of epherma loosely inserted, including a series of publisher's ads and a single prospectus leaf for Wallich's unpublished work on east Indian ferns, Filices Asiaticae Rariores. (Lacking parts 1 & 2, some very light marginal creasing to part 3, some text leaves with very light spotting, others very lightly evenly browned.) Original cloth-backed printed wrappers (very light spotting and soiling, slightly more so to the last 3 parts, rear wrapper to last part chipped and frayed at edges with heavier soiling). Provenance: unidentified discreet library labels with ms. classmarks to upper wrappers. A MAGNIFICENT RENDERING OF INDIAN PLANTS. The work was heavily subsidised by the East India Company, and even employed the same team of artists at the Calcutta botanic garden where Wallich served as director from 1817 to 1846. Curtis, William Griffith, and others, double-page engraved map of India by J. Arrowsmith partially colored in outline, 3-page list of subscribers in vol. 1, half-titles in vols. 1 and 3 only (as usual), table of plates in each volume; light toning to several quires in vols. 1 and 3, plates 31 and 158 toned, minor marginal soiling to plates, chiefly confined to vol. 1, small loss to bottom margin of 3:2E1. Contemporary half green morocco gilt over boards covered in red moiré paper, coated yellow endpapers, edges gilt; extremities rubbed, spines slightly faded, endpapers foxed.

        3 volumes, 2o (534 x 355mm.), 295 hand-coloured lithographic plates on 294 sheets, by M. Gauci and Weddell after Gorchand, Vishnu Prasad, M. Curtis, Miss Drake, and others, plates 222/223 constituting one folding plate, printed by Engelmann, Graf, Coindet & Co., Engelmann & Co., and Graf & Soret. One folding double-page engraved map. (A little thumb-soiling of plate margins, plates 13 and 22 in vol. I slightly affected by damp, occasional spotting of text.) Contemporary green morocco gilt by J. Mackenzie, 'bookbinder to the King,' covers with wide floral border, spine compartments tooled with a central sunflower, rosettes and semi-circles of strawberries, gilt turn-ins, comb-marbled endpapers, gilt edges. A MAGNIFICENT RENDERING OF INDIAN PLANTS according to European taste, including on the first plate the orchid tree ( Amherstia nobilis ) which the author had found near a derelict monastery on the Salween river in what is now Myanmar. Like Roxburgh's earlier Plants of the Coast of Coromandel, this work was heavily subsidised by the East India Company, and even employed the same team of artists at the Calcutta botanic garden where Wallich (n‚ Wulff), who was born in Copenhagen, served as director from 1817 to 1846. The Indian plant illustrator Gorchand executed 146 watercolour paintings for the work, and his colleague Vishnu Prasad 109, 'but all that is known about these two is their miserable pay - they received the same salary as scribes' (Lack). Wallich had several years, leave of absence in England to supervise the printing and colouring. According to his preface, the skilled colourist was 'Mr. John Clark.'
