Signed and dated lower right: Wallis 1812 The English landscape painter G.A. Wallis, a representative of classicism and early Heidelberg Romanticism, led quite an eventful life. In 1788 he traveled to Naples via Switzerland and lived in Rome as of 1794. After stints in Portugal, Spain and again Italy, he lived in Heidelberg from 1812 to 1816, where he was visited, among others, by Emperor Franz I, Tsar Alexander I, as well as Goethe and the Boisserée brothers. Wallis moved to Florence in 1817, where he died 30 years later. We would like to thank Dr. Monika von Wild, Münster, author of the Wallis catalogue raisonné, for confirming the authenticity of the present painting. She assumes that the inspiration or model for the composition was a now lost sketch of a north Italian landscape that the artist may have made on his journey from Italy to Heidelberg in 1811/12 (email from August 29, 2024). She writes: “In this perfectly composed piece, the artist has avoided the overly heroic nature of later paintings (1816). […] For me one of the most successful paintings that I know of by Wallis and proof of his contemporary recognition.”.

  • G. WALLIS (1761-1847), Tivoli with the Temple of Vesta, around 1800, Pencil
    Apr. 27, 2024

    G. WALLIS (1761-1847), Tivoli with the Temple of Vesta, around 1800, Pencil

    Est: €2,100 - €2,800

George Augustus Wallis (1761 Merton (London) - 1847 Florence): View of Tivoli with the Temple of Vesta, c. 1800, Pencil Technique: Pencil on Paper Inscription: Verso numbered: "Tivoli 2". Date: c. 1800 Description: George Augustus Wallis, during his lifetime a highly celebrated painter of classicism and today unjustly forgotten in art history, shows in this view of Tivoli precisely the break between classicism and romanticism. Whereas previously the emphasis had been on documenting the monumentality and elegance of antiquity in his paintings, in the Romantic period nature increasingly took centre stage. Wallis illustrates this process in his sheet when he allows Tivoli to grow almost imperceptibly out of the tree-covered hills, so that it does not catch the eye at first glance. Nature and the view of the landscape form the centre of interest and displace antiquity in favour of a new self-image. | Watermark: Crown Provenance: Verso: another pencil drawing: rock formation in the mountains Keywords: Tivoli, temple, Vesta, southern landscape, houses, Italy, deciduous forest, trees, slope, hill, 19th century, Romanticism, Landscape, Italy,
