          Feb. 06, 2024

Original Vintage WWII Defense Bonds Poster You Buy Em We'll Fly Em by Wilkinson Medium 1942

          Est: $500 - $900

A flying ace pilot smiles and gives the thumbs up to the viewer to promote war bonds, saying "You Buy Em, We'll Fly Em" in this 1942 WWII poster by J. Walter Wilkinson and his son Walter G. Wilkinson. The artwork features a squadron of Douglas SBD Dauntless', which were used by the US Navy as scout planes and dive bombers. The seal at the bottom of the poster reads, "The More Bonds You Buy- The More Planes Will Fly." This poster is one in a series of six created by the award winning father-son team for the United States Treasury Department. This is the medium sized version of this poster. J. Walter Wilkinson (1892-1988) and his son Walter G. Wilkinson (1917-1971) created several posters for the United States Department of Treasury during the Second World War. J. Walter Wilkinson was an academic painter who studied in Italy and worked for advertising agencies in Philadelphia. He specialized in outdoors landscapes, but also created many commercial artworks for advertising campaigns including Ivory Soap, Pabst Beer, and Ballantine Ale. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.

JOSEPH WALTER (BRITISH 1783-1856)A VIEW OF PILL ON THE AVON WITH THE BRISTOL CHANNEL AND THE WELSH HILLS IN THE DISTANCEOil on canvasSigned and dated `1838' (lower left)55 x 95cm (21½ x 37¼ in.)Provenance:Frost and Reed, London, circa 1950. Mrs Audrey Stock, by 1984. Exhibited:City of Bristol Museum and Art Gallery, Marine Artists of Bristol, Nicholas Pocock and Joseph Walter, 1982, no.53) illustrated p.84, lent from a private collection. Pill, at Avonmouth, was the home of most of the channel pilots and of the towboat men. When the first resident steam tug, Fury, appeared in 1836, the towboat men of Pill boarded her at night and set her adrift, but it was a hopeless protest and the population of Pill was initially to decline over the next decades. Joseph Walter's inclusion of the merchant vessel accompanied by two steam tugs in the middle distance deliberately documents these changes.

Although it was described on his death certificate that he was ''A ship portrait painter'' he was more than that and drew well, his draughtsmanship being excellent. As well as his ship portraits he recorded such events as the floating out of the SS Great Britain in 1843.
