Oil on canvas, relined Nassau-Idstein, Saarbrücken, 1663 Attributed to Johann Jacob Walther (c.1600-after 1679) - Portrait and flower painter, active at the court of Nassau-Idstein Titled upper right 'DOROTHEA AMALIA / FZNS [Princess of Nassau-Saarbrücken] GEB: 1661' With an expert report by Professor Dr. Börsch-Supan, Berlin, dated 31/05/2008 (available in copy, original certificate by request) Dimensions: 93.5 x 74 cm Good condition Representative portrait of Countess Dorothea Amalie of Nassau-Idstein as a child Object is regular taxed. 19% VAT is added to the purchase price for deliveries within the EU The present painting is attributed to the German painter Johann Jacob Walther and depicts the Countess Dorothea Amalie of Nassau-Idstein (1661-1740) at the age of two. The girl is portrayed in an elegant gown with pearl necklaces around the neck and wrists, holding an apple in her right hand. In the left background, the view opens through an archway onto a landscape. The painting was most likely created during a stay of the artist at the court of the Count of Nassau-Idstein in 1663. Walther was commissioned to execute frescoes in the palace garden when he presumably painted this portrait of the Count's young daughter. The inscription on the portrait must have originated after 1688 for Georg August Samuel of Nassau-Idstein (1665-1721), Dorothea Amalie's younger brother, was only then elevated to the rank of prince. The painting is titled upper right 'DOROTHEA AMALIA / FZNS [Princess of Nassau-Saarbrücken] GEB: 1661'. It is overall in good condition consistent with age. There are several retouchings to the background, the dress and partially the face. The frame shows losses. The framed work measures 105 x 85 cm, the stretcher frame measures 93.5 x 74 cm. Johann Jacob Walther (c. 1600-after 1679) Johann Jacob Walther was presumably a pupil of the miniature painter Friedrich Brentel. In his youth, he traveled extensively through Europe. Among his contemporaries he was regarded as an excellent painter. Walther created primarily animal and flower pieces in oil and watercolor as well as religious themes and numerous portraits. He was employed at the court of Count John of Nassau-Idstein, staying in the palace in 1655, 1662 and 1663, executing ceiling paintings in a cave in the palace garden. In addition, Walther was also the author of a chronicle of the life in Strasbourg during the Thirty Years' War. Works by Walther are in the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris. (tfa) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
