attributed to WANG QI (Chinese 1884-1937) FOUR FAMILLE ROSE PLAQUES, CHINESE REPUBLIC PERIOD (1912-1949), enameled glazed porcelain plaques, each plaque with rows of poetic calligraphy and red seal mark, each signed with two characters in faint gilt, verso two with ink character inscriptions, one with a numbered stamp, and paper labels, "Made in China." Height: 14 3/4" Width: 10 1/8" Depth: 1/4" Note: At the twilight of the Qing Dynasty, and carrying into the early Chinese Republic period, the Eight Friends of Zhushan, formed an art collective to preserve old and ancient Chinese traditional enamel on porcelain arts. The last light bearers of the old Chinese cultural identity that fluttered frighteningly close extinction in the early to mid 20th century worked tirelessly and mystically even under full moons to orchestrate their mission of preservation. The present four plaque cycle shows the life of a living artist. The first grassy scene is of a toddler child tending to tea, while listening to music under orange color blooms in lush landscape; an allusion to spring. The second plaque, a summer scene is backed by smolder sunset, is a youth learning calligraphy with a bureaucrat wearing a mandarin orange robe. The third scene of adulthood shows the grown student dressed in a yellow gold robe immersed in strategic training and formalism with his aging teacher. The adult is enjoying life and his robe color becomes important as we see him aged in the fourth plaque. A winter scene closes the cycle and in a yellow robe the aged student is now showing a scroll, and sharing his lifetime of learning with a child in a pink robe; standing before a giant crane decorated screen. The elegant cycle is a fable of heritage and living a good life executed with mastery bearing four of the same seal marks.

L’année suivante, il est à Yan’an pour participer à la profonde restructuration imposée par Luxun en matière de création : ainsi, les thèmes proposés aux masses populaires doivent être accessibles par opposition à un art lettré trop loin des préoccupations du plus grand nombre. Ses œuvres sont publiées dans les quotidiens et revues à grande diffusion. Ses sujets s’attachent à célébrer le cadre rural, les espaces que les paysans cultivent avec acharnement, la beauté des paysages naturels, montagnes étranges et lieux notamment plantés d’arbres aux formes complexes. Il observe également les villes en pleine reconstruction et décrit les chantiers imposants qui donnent à Pékin un aspect méconnaissable. Sa gravure est précise, percutante, les zones de premier plan comme les fonds ne cessent de privilégier le détail qui reflète une volonté de simplicité narrative dans les mises en page. D’abord adepte du noir et blanc qui met l’accent sur les contrastes entre ombre et lumière, il recourt parfois à de larges zones chromatiques notamment pour traduire l’environnement naturel. Il fait partie de ce groupe de graveurs qui ont concilié leur activité de créateur à une esthétique focalisée sur le réel mouvant de la société qui s’est mise en place depuis 1949. Tirées à petit nombre, ses gravures sur bois sont actuellement dans les fonds de nombre d’établissements patrimoniaux. Elles sont le reflet d’une esthétique qui fait le lien entre la tradition de la gravure sur bois chinoise et sa vitalité remise dans un contexte social de premier plan.

One poem in black ink. One seal. Condition: Good condition with some wear and minimal firing flaws. Provenance: From a private estate in the United Kingdom. Weight: 231.6 g including frame Dimensions: 22.2 x 14.5 cm including the frame Lin Bu (967-1028), art name Hejing, was a Chinese poet during the Northern Song dynasty. One of the most famous verse masters of his time. His works and theatrical solitude won him nationwide fame, and he was offered prestigious government posts, although he refused all civic duties in pursuit of his poetry. Long after he died, Lin’s eccentric attitude and his works retained a vivid place in Song cultural imagination and later works. He wrote countless poems on the plum blossom. Among the most famous is ‘Shanyuan Xiaomei’. It reads ‘Among withered flowers plum trees brightly bloom, dominating garden with beauty unsurpassed.’ With a European frame. (2) Wang Qi (1884-1937) Wang Qi was the most outstanding porcelain painter of his day. The present plaques, lot 359, 360, 361 and 362 are fine examples of his use of rapid and expressionistic brush strokes. After the fall of the Qing dynasty, imperial orders for porcelain dwindled at Jingdezhen, the main porcelain production center of China. Porcelain artists, released from imperial restraints, developed their own styles based upon famous scroll painters of earlier periods. Eight of the leading artists formed a group, which despite calling themselves ‘The Full Moon Society’ came to be known as the ‘Eight Friends of Zushan’. The development of Wang Qi’s mature style can be traced to a trip he made to Shanghai in 1916 to see an exhibition of works by a group of painters called Yangzhou Baguai (the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou). Wang was so impressed by the paintings of Huang Shen, one of the Eight Eccentrics, that he started to emulate Huang’s style. This influence can still be seen one some of the present lots with their whimsical, sometimes exaggerated figures and sparse backgrounds juxtaposed with long calligraphic inscriptions in running script. Not content to just emulate Huang’s style, Wang created his own by incrementally incorporating Western techniques in his work. Weight: 266.5 g including frame Dimensions: 22.2 x 14.5 cm including the frame Wang Xizhi (303-361) was a Chinese writer and official who lived during the Jin Dynasty, best known for his mastery of Chinese calligraphy. Wang is generally regarded as the greatest Chinese calligrapher in history and was a master of all forms of Chinese calligraphy, especially the running script. Emperor Taizong of Tang admired his works so much that the original Preface to the Poems Composed at the Orchid Pavilion (Lanting Xu) is said to have been buried with the emperor in his mausoleum. Wang Xizhi was said to derive inspiration from natural forms such as the graceful neck movements of geese. With a European frame. A PORCELAIN PLAQUE BY WANG QI (1884-1937) China, signed Zushan ke Wang Qi. Depiction of an elderly scholar, wearing a large straw hat and a gnarly wood cane, instructing a pupil with a fishing rod and a basket. Painted in fine polychrome enamels. One poem in black ink. One seal. Provenance: From a private estate in the United Kingdom. Condition: Good condition with some wear and minimal firing flaws. Weight: 276.7 g including frame Dimensions: 22.2 x 14.5 cm including the frame With a European frame. (2) Wang Qi (1884-1937) Wang Qi was the most outstanding porcelain painter of his day. The present plaques, lot 359, 360, 361 and 362 are fine examples of his use of rapid and expressionistic brush strokes. After the fall of the Qing dynasty, imperial orders for porcelain dwindled at Jingdezhen, the main porcelain production center of China. Porcelain artists, released from imperial restraints, developed their own styles based upon famous scroll painters of earlier periods. Eight of the leading artists formed a group, which despite calling themselves ‘The Full Moon Society’ came to be known as the ‘Eight Friends of Zushan’. The development of Wang Qi’s mature style can be traced to a trip he made to Shanghai in 1916 to see an exhibition of works by a group of painters called Yangzhou Baguai (the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou). Wang was so impressed by the paintings of Huang Shen, one of the Eight Eccentrics, that he started to emulate Huang’s style. This influence can still be seen one some of the present lots with their whimsical, sometimes exaggerated figures and sparse backgrounds juxtaposed with long calligraphic inscriptions in running script. Not content to just emulate Huang’s style, Wang created his own by incrementally incorporating Western techniques in his work.
