During the Great Turkish War in the late 17th century, the city of Vienna was besieged, but eventually, Austria became the major power as a result of the final defeat of the Ottoman Empire. Condition: The painting is in good condition according to age. The varnish has been renewed. The canvas has been covered with newspaper on the reverse. The color surface shows typical craquelure, minor paint losses and pressure marks from the stretcher. The upper margin shows nails from the mounting. The inspection under UV light reveals filling areas of retouching to the craquelure and small touch-ups to the background. The frame has been restored and is in good condition. The painting measures 113 x 90 cm, while the frame is 126 x 101.5 cm tall. Franz Wappler (1694/1707 stated) Wappler was a portrait painter in Vienna and Munich and was mentioned since 1694. He was also active as a lay brother of the Franciscans in Munich in 1707. His sitters included Elector Max Emanuel of Bavaria, Elector Joseph Clemens of Cologne and other well-known personalities. It is therefore very likely that Wappler acted as a quite renowned artist of his time. Two paintings by the artist are today preserved at the Bayerische Staatgemäldesammlungen in Munich.
