William Ward,  - Château and Cathedral at Nantes, after Joseph Mallord William …

      Est: £300 - £400

William Ward,  British 1829-1908-  Château and Cathedral at Nantes, after Joseph Mallord William Turner, RA;  pen, brown ink, and watercolour heightened with touches of bodycolour on blue paper, inscribed in John Ruskin's hand 'Nantes / By Wm Ward. after Turner / J. Ruskin' and 'Excellent', verso (lower edge), 16.5 x 22 cm.  Provenance:  Anon. sale, Sotheby's, London, 29 April 1987, lot 82.  Private Collection, UK.  Exhibited:  Oxford, Corpus Christi College, 'Ruskin Exhibition', November 1970, no.57.  Note:  The present work is a copy after a watercolour by J. M. W. Turner (1775-1851) of similar dimensions, which Turner executed after his visit to Nantes in 1826, and which is held in the Tate Galleries, London [D24657]. Ward was a friend and pupil of John Ruskin (1819-1900) and was encouraged by Ruskin to make copies after works by J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851). Indeed, Ruskin's presence is very much felt in the present work, which bears his annotation and praise 'Excellent'.

Approximately 9 x 11 inches, artwork measures 4 x 5.25 inches. Born in Walsall near London, England on June 12, 1901, William Winthrop Ward immigrated to Boston in 1916 and spent much of his youth boating off the coast of Massachusetts. After a stint with the U.S. Marines, he came to California in 1927. While a member of the Coast Guard, he began painting while tending the Point Lobos lighthouse on the coast at San Francisco. His work came to the attention of local artist Heliodor Hammarstrom, who tended the windmills in Golden Gate Park. Hammarstrom gave him encouragement and introduced Ward to George Demont Otis with whom he studied for several years. He was also a pupil of portraitist Thomas Leighton
