Arthur Wardle Sold at Auction Prices

Sport painter, Animal painter, Painter, b. 1864 - d. 1949

(b London, 1864; d London, 1949) British Painter. In the first two decades of this century Arthur Wardle was one of the best-known contemporary British animal painters. He portrayed an astonishing diversity of subjects with an engaging naturalism and displayed a superb command of different media. Although Wardle's reputation was made with his large mythological paintings, his most individual work was in pastel, which underwent a revival in Britain in the 1890s. Inspired by French art, many leading British artists had experimented successfully with pastel, leading to the foundation of the Pastel Society. Wardle was elected a member in 1911. It is thought that Wardle was completely self-taught. His first work was accepted for exhibition at the Royal Academy in 1880 when he was just sixteen and was titled, Study of Cattle on the banks of the Thames. His first major work to feature wild animals, Panthers Resting, was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1891. From this point on, the exotic animal became a key element in many of his more important works. ARTHUR WARDLE (1860 - 1949) Deer Stalkers Oil on panel, 16.5 x 27cm Signed; also inscribed verso 'Deer Stalkers' and 'Finished study for picture in Royal Academy 1892'; with Christie's stencil verso.Ê Arthur Wardle (1860 Ð 1949) began his prolific artistic career at the young age of sixteen in 1880 with an exhibit held at the Royal Academy, London. His first exhibit, a study of cattle grazing by the Thames, was well received and forged what was to be a lifelong interest in animal studies and animal portraiture. Wardle though self-taught, was a gifted draughtsman and proficient in all mediums. He excelled however in the use of pastels which saw him elected to the Pastel Society in 1911.Ê Although widely considered one the most proficient dog painters of the 19th and 20th centuries, WardleÕs paintings were also informed by the decidedly more exotic animal subjects he found at London Zoo, including lions, tigers, elephants and leopards. Emboldened by his early successes, the artist moved to St. JohnÕs Wood, London so that he could access his models more easily. Here he no doubt sketched some of the worldÕs most famous animals including Jumbo the Elephant who was tragically and infamously killed in a locomotive accident in 1885.Ê This artwork is likely an early study for one of WardleÕs most widely known pieces ÔThe Deer StalkersÕ, currently in the permanent collection of LeedÕs Museum. Another similar example is ÔThe Deer StealerÕ, formerly of the Tanenbaum Collection and RehÕs Gallery, New York and now privately owned. This neat sized study is a clear forerunner for what was to become a staple of WardleÕs work - the hunting scene. Although ranging from delicate pastel sketches to large mythological scenes in oils, WardleÕs animals remain an ever-constant fixture in his work.

He exhibited at the Royal Academy for over fifty-five years and showed An Idyll of Summer in 1900 when he was thirty five. Many of his works show animals, mostly dogs, in their natural environments, but a number of his pictures, including many of his most important exhibition pieces, include humans, such as his 1895 Royal Academy exhibit A Fairy Tale, (Christie's 11 July 2013, lot 4, £337,875). He was an academic artist by temperament and he would have been very conscious of the tradition of a hierarchy of subjects, 'history painting' representing the highest form of artistic expression followed by portraiture, genre, landscape, animal painting and still life. By making animals the protagonists of 'historical' subjects he was having the best of both worlds, claiming the pictorial high ground while remaining true to his field of expertise. Occasionally he would attempt a classical theme, 'history' in its purest form. More often Wardle opted for inventions of his own such as An Idyll of Summer which, while being a bucolic celebration of youth, may also allude to the mythological figure of Cygnus, who appeared in many myths, most of which led to his transformation into a swan. Wardle may be thinking of either Cygnus, the handsome son of Apollo who, together with his mother Thyrie, was transformed into a swan, or possibly Cygnus son of Poseidon. In this tale, he was abandoned on a beach as a baby and subsequently rescued by fishermen who, inspired by a flock of swans flying overhead and his pale complexion, called him Cygnus. He would go on to gain a reputation as a warrior during the Trojan Wars and on his death Poseidon transformed him into a swan.

Arthur Wardle (British, 1864-1949) Look Out!, 1885 oil on canvas signed Arthur Wardle (lower right); signed, titled, and dated (verso) 30 x 20 inches. Property from the Collection of Frances G. Scaife Literature: William Secord, Dog Painting, 1840-1940 : A Social History of the Dog in Art, Woodbridge, 1992, p. 172, no. 218, illus. Foremost among scenes of the hunt in the Scaife collection is Arthur Wardle's Look Out!. By the 1890s, Wardle's depictions of both domestic and exotic animals, in their natural habitat and with vivacious and acute intelligence, made him one of the best-known British painters of wildlife. Wardle was strongly influenced by Sir Edwin Henry Landseer, but whereas Landseer endowed human emotions upon his animals, Wardle preferred to keep them undisturbed by human responsibility. Here, Wardle captures a tense moment in a picturesque landscape: the terrier, ears perked, investigates the ground before him, where below keeps silent and still a rabbit brown as the hole it lives in. This is the silence before the storm, a moment of anticipation - the terrier, bred for this purpose, will surely find its target. Wardle certainly knew how to, and indeed did, compose energetic scenes of chases with a cacophony of action. This image thus further demonstrates his mastery of narrative and of the genre.
