Andy Warhol Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Photographer, b. 1928 - d. 1987

When artist Andy Warhol began painting commercial products, the result was a new art based not on nature or history, but rather popular culture, and thus Pop Art was born. Warhol's showing of his iconic Campbell's Soup Cans in 1962 consisted of 32 nearly identical canvases installed in a precise grid to better imply a grocery shelf grouping. The boldness of Andy Warhol's paintings created a stir in the art world, as did Warhol's distinct avant-garde lifestyle.

Artist Andy Warhol was famous for being fascinated by fame, and few works exemplify this more than his silk-screened images of Marilyn Monroe. Displayed together, these images created a sense of the cultural figure as a consumer item. It's fitting then that Orange Marilyn, an Andy Warhol painting worth $17.3 million at auction, once was his most valuable work. Andy Warhol (American 1928-1987) & Dana Gillespie, friend of David Bowie, proposed portrait for her album cover 'Ain't gonna play no second fiddle', 1972

                    Est: £15,000 - £20,000

Andy Warhol (American 1928-1987) & Richard Bernstein (American 1939-2002), Dana Gillespie, friend of David Bowie, proposed portrait for her album cover 'Ain't gonna play no second fiddle', 1972; screenprint in colours on canvas, with additions of spray paint and hand painted areas, indistinctly inscribed 'Richard Bernstein' (in pencil on the stretcher), size: 48 x 48 cm, (unframed) Note: This work was created by Warhol and Richard Bernstein as a possible design for the album cover for 'Ain't gonna play no second fiddle' by Dana Gillespie. The photo on which the silkscreen was based was shot by Terry O'Neill the famous celebrity photographer. Bowie and Dana Gillespie had the same manager and Bowie had written a song for Dana called 'Andy Warhol' which Gillespie recorded on her album 'Weren't born a man' in 1973. Bowie produced Gillespie's version of the song and Mick Ronson played guitar. Bowie and Dana asked Warhol to do a cover design for the album 'Ain't gonna play no second fiddle'. The design was created at the Warhol factory in New York in 1972, probably in collaboration with Richard Bernstein, along with another portrait of Dana Gillespie. Dana collected the work herself from Warhol's factory in 1972. RCA records in the end used another version of this portrait for the album cover, which is still owned by Gillespie. Richard Bernstein was a pop artist befriended by Warhol and produced most of the 'Interview' magazine covers for Warhol. He is known to have been close to Warhol and owned each others artworks. Andy Warhol, La Grande Passion, 1984

                    Est: £10,000 - £15,000

Andy Warhol, American 1928-1987, La Grande Passion, 1984; offset lithograph on thick paper, signed in pencil, published by Carillon Importers Ltd, sheet: 98.7 x 94.1 cm, (framed) Note: This is one of only 100 hand signed copies. This work was based on a photograph by the artist and was based on an advertising campaign for Carillon Importers. La Grande Passion was a new exotic drink of a mix of Grand Marnier and Passion fruit hence the name. Throughout his career Warhol was obsessed with branding for example the famous Campbell's soup cans. This piece created in 1984, La Grande Passion is a late career example of Warhol's interest in product design and advertising. To create this, Warhol took Polaroids and created screenprints on both board and canvas. There is life and celebration in the image, with vivid shares of coral, yellow, aquamarine and the abstract passion fruit flower. In the centre there is the bottle of La Grande Passion, a bottle of passion fruit flavoured brandy (a sister to Grand Marnier), a tropical treat newly introduced to the American market, but now no longer made. Carillon Importers, the company that owned the liquor brand and commissioned Warhol to create the image for the advertising campaign, was so pleased with the results of La Grande Passion that they commissioned Warhol again to create a similar image for Absolut Vodka in 1985. This iconic piece is represented in numerous public collections such as The Tate Modern (London), The Whitney Museum of American Art, and the National Galleries of Scotland. There is a similar numbered print in an edition of 1000 copies, but these prints are not hand signed. King-Nero and N. Printz (eds), The Andy Warhol Catalogue Raisonné of Paintings and Sculptures, 1970–1974, vol. 03, New York 2010, no. 2795 with ill. Note: In July 1974, the Genevra-based dealer Marie-Louise Jeanneret invited Andy Warhol as an artist-in-residence to a summer art colony in Boissano, Italy: The Centre Internationale d’Experimentation Artistique. Warhol probably spent no more than a week in Boissano, but during that time he photographed the following visitors to Boissano for their portraits: the collectors Dr. Luigi Accame, Giuliano Gori, Carla Pizzera and Simon Spierer; a young ballerina, Gabriella Cohen and Jeanneret herself. Spierer posed with his two Borzoi dogs, Taigan and Vedma. Three Turin-based collectors, who were passionate about the writings of the French novelist Marcel Proust, commissioned four portraits of the writer in lieu of their own (cat.nos. 2795–2798). In 1976 Jeanneret organized a Warhol exhibition in Boissano that included most of the portrait commissioned in 1974. Thanks to art, instead of seeing one world only, our own, we see that world multiply itself and we have at our disposal as many worlds as there are original artists, worlds more different one from the other than those which revolve in infinite space, worlds which, centuries after the extinction of the fire from which their light first emanated, whether it is called Rembrandt or Vermeer, send us still each one its special radiance. Marcel Proust, Joanna Kilmartin (1992). “In Search of Lost Time: Time regained. VI”, Random House (UK) The work Marcel Proust, created by Andy Warhol in 1974 on commission from Swiss art dealer Marie-Louise Jeanneret for a group of Italian collectors, is an emblematic example of the extraordinary ability of this American genius to reinterpret cultural icons. Inspired by a late 19th-century photograph by Otto Wegener, this piece stands out for its dense and vibrant use of acrylic paint. Bright shades of ochre and yellow emerge vigorously, dominating the composition and recalling the Mediterranean landscape of Boissano. In the 1960s and 70s, Jeanneret hosted international artists there in a sort of temporary residence, thanks to her innovative vision and the foundation of the “International Centre for Artistic Experimentation.” In Warhol’s portrait, the power of the colours merges with the image of Proust, evoking a reflection on memory, the central theme of his masterpiece In Search of Lost Time. Warhol creates a dynamic tension between the mechanical repetition of screen printing and the materiality of painting, transforming the work into a tribute not only to the French literary genius, but also to the European cultural heritage, filtered through the irreverent language of Pop Art.
