      Est: £600 - £800

Circle of Charles Knighton Warren,  British 1856-1893-  Portrait of an Egyptian woman;  oil on canvas, 50.7 x 37.9 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  The present painting is highly reminiscent of the work of Charles Knighton Warren, who was celebrated for his Orientalist scenes, often depicting figures in somewhat fanciful costume, evoking a North African location by setting them against a background of hieroglyphs or Moorish architecture. Like the present scene, Warren's paintings are generally imbued with a powerful sense of stillness, with figures seemingly lost in contemplation, looking away from the viewer. Indeed, the subject matter, composition, and treatment of the present work very much recall Warren's painting of an 'Egyptian Musician', which is held in the collection of the Sunderland Museum [TWCMS : B2524].

      Est: £10,000 - £15,000

Charles Knighton Warren,  British 1856-1893-  Boy playing a twin armed flute, or 'diaulos';  oil on canvas, signed 'Knighton Warren' (lower right), 61.6 x 50.9 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK (by descent).  Note:  Warren was celebrated for his Orientalist scenes, often depicting figures in somewhat fanciful costume, evoking a North African location by setting them against a background of hieroglyphs or Moorish architecture. He lived in London and regularly exhibited portraits, genre scenes and historical subjects at the Royal Academy between 1878 and 1892. The present work may be that which is entitled ‘A Hymn for Osiris’, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1883 (no.567). It is probable that he travelled to the East but it is not known at what date.  Warren's paintings are generally imbued with a powerful sense of stillness, with figures seemingly lost in contemplation, looking away from the viewer. This highly introspective quality defines both the present work and his painting ‘The Nubian Guard’, a larger figure study which sold at Sotheby's, Paris, 29 October 2018, lot 23 (€321,000). Here, a young boy plays the unusual-looking ‘diaulos’, an ancient Greek instrument constructed of two connected pipes. Warren has effectively conveyed a sense of the figure's total concentration on his task, his eyes fixed on his fingers playing the pipe. The composition and subject of this painting also display similarities to the artist's oil ‘An Egyptian Musician’, held in the collection of Sunderland Museum [TWCMS: B2524].
