      Arthur Wasse (British, 1854-1930) WINTER LANDSCAPE oil on canvas signed lower left h:30  w:37 in. Arthur Cramer James Wasse was born in Manchester, the son of John Angelo Wasse, a painter of miniature portraits. He moved to Germany in 1875, where he attended the Munich School and studied under Carl Theodor von Piloty (1826-1886) and Wilhelm von Diez (1839-1907). From 1895, the painter established his residence and studio in Rothenburg and regularly commuted between England and Germany. He exhibited at The Royal Accademy, the Royal Society of British Artists, The Glasgow Institute, Walker Art Gallery Liverpool, Manchester City Art Gallery, amongst others. His charming townscapes of Rothenburg and landscapes of the surrounding countryside are related to the Romantic style. In 1940, Rothenburg received an extensive donation of paintings initiated by the painter's widow. On the occasion of Wasse's 150th anniversary in 2004 a major retrospective was held in Rothenburg's Municipal Museum.

Dimensions: 75 x 58 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection, Australia Arthur Wasse was specialized in the depiction of courtyards, house entrances, interiors and domestic sceneries; the auction record for one of his paintings currently sets at around €20,000 The present interior is a charming work by Arthur Wasse, painted around 1900 in Rothenburg, where the artist had settled since 1895. It depicts a view of beautifully stained glass windows set between the niches of an old building, presumably located in a quarter of his new place of residence. Wasse was fascinated by the townscapes of the city and documented the areas around his studio many times. The artist's artistic output remains of great value to this day, as it reveals a distinct insight into the historic architectures and atmospheres in Rothenburg. The painting is in good condition considering its age. It is signed and inscribed lower left 'Arthur Wasse. Rothenburg. o/T.'. The varnish is minimally browned. Inspection under UV light reveals scattered areas of faint retouching. The frame is in good condition with small traces of age and use. The framed work measures 89.5 x 73 cm and the size of the stretcher is 75 x 58 cm.
